Neptunus overwhelms UVV in sweep
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won 9-1 on Sunday (May 22) against Pickles UVV to complete a 3-game sweep.

It was an overwhelming sweep, as Neptunus won the first two games with 11-1 and 22-0 scores. It was the fourth game in a row in which the Neptunus-pitchers gave up two or less basehits.

In the 3-game series, Neptunus scored 42 runs, while UVV managed to score only two. Besides that, Neptunus collected 45 basehits, while UVV registered only four in the three games, making this one of the most lopsided series ever.

The 42 runs scored by Neptunus are not the most in a 3-game series sweep, as is the 40-run difference. Last season, Neptunus scored 43 runs in a sweep against The Hawks (giving up 10 runs). Kinheim and Amsterdam Pirates then both scored 40 runs in a series-sweep. During the 2014 season, Amsterdam Pirates and Pioniers both scored 42 runs in a series-sweep. In 2013, there were four 3-game sweeps in which 40 or more runs were scored. The most that year were registered by Hoofddorp Pioniers, who scored 45 runs in a 3-game sweep against ADO Lakers, while not giving up a run.

The 45 basehits that Neptunus collected in this series also are not the most in a series-sweep. Last season, there were four sweeps with 40-plus basehits, including 54 hit by Kinheim in a sweep against Pioniers. Neptunus hit 51 last year in a sweep against The Hawks.

Curaçao Neptunus vs. Pickles UVV
Today's game was played in a drizzling rain from the second inning on. As a result, there were some minor delays to do some maintenance to the mound and catcher/hitting-area, but it was not needed to interrupt the game for the rain.

Neptunus opened the score with three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Quinn Tramm, who made his first start of the season for UVV. Last season, he was one of the regular starters for Mampaey The Hawks. Tramm was the second change in the starting rotation for UVV in this series. In the previous series, Timo van Ancum, Jurjen van Zijl and Canadian Jeremy Filipek had been the starting pitchers. Instead, Gilian van Lith started last Thursday-evening and Tramm started today, while Filipek was used as designated hitter on Saturday and today. Van Ancum and Filipek both didn't see action as pitcher during this series and there are some unconfirmed reports that both are currently injured. There also was an uncorfirmed report that Head Coach Ferenc Jongejan might take the mound himself today. That didn't happen, but fact is that Jongejan was added to the active roster of UVV last week as a pitcher.

In the bottom of the first inning, Neptunus scored its first run the easy way without having to something themselves, as Tramm walked the first four batters he faced. The righthander got the bases loaded when he walked Dwayne Kemp, Benjamin Dille and Christian Diaz. An early coaching visit followed, but hereafter, Tramm also walked Gianison Boekhoudt, which led to the first run. An infield-fly then accounted for the first out, but Rien Vernooij followed with a 2-run single to make it 3-0.

UVV got one run back in the second inning off of Kenny Van Den Branden. Steven van Reem led off with a double, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Bazuin (which ended in an error). With one out, Van Reem scored on a sacrifice bunt by Norbert Jongerius.

Neptunus added a run of its own in its second at bat. Daniel Fernandes then led off with a single, moved when Dwayne Kemp walked, then scored on a single by Benjamin Dille.

The Rotterdam-squad scored its next run in the third. This time, Rien Vernooij led off with a bunt-single, stole second base, then also third with one out and scored on a single by Shaldimar Daantji. The inning ended with a double play, but Neptunus now led 5-1.

Neptunus scored its next run in the fourth. Benjamin Dille then began with a single. With one out, the bases got loaded when Gianison Boekhoudt also singled and Dashenko Ricardo walked. A sacrifice fly by Rien Vernooij brought in the run, but Neptunus left two runners behind.

After UVV had turned a double play in the fifth inning, Neptunus added two runs in the sixth off reliever Kevin van Veen. The bases got loaded when Benjamin Dille and Christian Diaz singled, then Gianison Boekhoudt walked. A single by Dashenko Ricardo and a force play-grounder by Rien Vernooij then brought in the runs, but again two runners were also left behind.

Neptunus scored its last run in the eighth inning. Gianison Boekhoudt then reached on an error to become the eighth consecutive lead-off hitter to reach base for Neptunus in this game. He moved to third base on a single by Dashenko Ricardo, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rien Vernooij.

Neptunus used six pitchers in this game. Kenny Van Den Branden threw the first five. With one out in the fourth inning, he gave up a single to Steven van Reem, who hit both basehits for UVV today. The Belgian righthander followed with two strikeouts.

Five relievers held UVV hitless from the sixth inning on. In the sixth, Berry van Driel walked Tony Enos with one out, but he was then eliminated in a rundown in a reversed double play. UVV was then retired in order in the next three innings by four relievers. Kevin Kelly and Bayron Cornelisse both pitched in the eighth inning.
