Pioniers sweeps DSS after change of fields
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Vaessen Pioniers completed its first sweep of the season on Sunday (May 22) by winning 7-4 against DSS.

Due to a heavy rain-shower early in the morning, the main-field of Pioniers had become unplayable, due to the construction of the field. It was then decided to move the game to Field #2 on the Pioniers Complex, as it was possible to prepare that field for the game. While the main field has the most beautiful scorers/announcers-box in the big league, there is no covered area for the Official Scorers on the second field. As a result, Official Scorers Brendy De Smet and Linda Steijger sat outdoors. Initially, that wasn't that much of a problem, but from the third inning on, it started to drizzle. And so, the two scorers completed the game, sitting in the stands under an umbrella...

It is not the first time that a big league-game is played on Field #2. On July 5, 2014, the first year in which Pioniers played on its new complex, there was a rare situation and a unique decision. The game between Pioniers and UVV started on the main field and was interrupted by a brief, but heavy rain-shower in the second inning. It was impossible to make the field playable again and it was then decided to move the remainder of the game to Field #2, making it the first-ever big league regular season-game that was played on two different fields on the same day!

In today's game, Pioniers led only 5-3 after five innings, but held onto the lead.

Vaessen Pioniers vs. DSS
After DSS had stranded a runner on second base in the top of the first inning, Pioniers scored four runs in its first at bat off of Tim Halderman. Three of the runs were unearned, due to an error. Zerzinho Croes led off with a single, then moved to third base when a fly to the outfield by next batter Max Draijer was missed. That might have been the problem of the wind, as it also is much windier on Field #2. The runners scored when Austin Weymouth followed with a sacrifice fly and Quintin De Cuba doubled. Hereafter, Kevin Dirksen singled and stole second base (with two outs), then Brian Raap delivered a 2-run double to make it 4-0.

Pioniers added a run in the second inning. Zerzinho Croes then led off with another single and stole second base. After advancing on a grounder, he scored with two outs on a single by Quintin De Cuba.

Trailing 5-0, DSS scored three runs in the top of the third inning off of lefhander Nick Keur. Joffrey Heus led off with a walk and Menno Lenting followed with a double. Heus then scored on a sacrifice fly by Koen Halderman, who himself reached first base safely, as his fly to the outfield also was missed. A passed ball then enabled Lenting to score the next run. Melvin Perdue then walked and the two runners moved on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Miner. Tino van Erk followed with a runscoring single to make it 5-3, but hereafter, two runners were left behind.

DSS failed to add more runs in the next innings, despite the fact that it got several runners in scoring position. In the fourth inning, with two outs, Menno Lenting hit a triple, but stranded. In the fifth, Melvin Perdue led off with a walk and Tino van Erk walked with one out, but were left behind.

Pioniers then added an insurance run in both the sixth and seventh inning. In the sixth, Shurman Marlin led off with a single. Max Ploegstra then took over the pitching for DSS, but gave up a single to Mark Smit. With runners on first and third base, a run was scored on a grounder by Zerzinho Croes to make it a 6-3 score.

In the top of the seventh, now trailing 6-3, Melvin Perdue reached base on an error for DSS, but was forced out on a grounder by Ryan Miner. The latter moved on a wild pitch, then advanced to third base when Tino van Erk singled again, but hereafter, a double play ended the inning.

Pioniers then scored its seventh run in the seventh inning. With one out, Kevin Dirksen walked and went on to score on a 2-out single by Shurman Marlin.

In the top of the ninth, DSS got the bases loaded with no outs. Jonah Van Bemmelen was inserted as new pitcher for Pioniers, but he gave up singles to Koen Halderman and Melvin Perdue, then walked Ryan Miner. Hereafter, Sedley Karel took over the pitching. Karel saw DSS score a run on a sacrifice fly by Tino van Erk, but he then struckout the next two batters to end the game.
