Draci Brno takes lead in Federations Cup-tournament

BRNO (Czech Rep.) - Host Draci Brno is the lone unbeaten team in the Federations Cup-tournament after registering a minimal 2-1 victory on Wednesday-evening (June 22) against Deurne Spartans from Belgium.

The second day of the tournament began with a 7-1 victory for Buffaloes Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria) against Moskvich (Russia). For the Bulgarian, this was its first win, while the Russians lost their second game.

In the afternoon, Apollo Bratislava (Slovakia) nipped Sölvesborg Firehawks (Sweden), 5-4. The Slovaks also record their first, while the Swedish lost their first game.

Buffaloes Blagoevgrad vs. Moskvich
In today's opener, Buffaloes Blagoevgrad rallied for three runs in the first inning and that was the basis for its 7-1 victory against Moskvich, its first win of the tournament.

In the Bulgarian first at bat, Bristo Dundalov led off with a walk and moved on a wild pitch. Next batter Petar Petrov then also walked and Krum Temelkov followed with a runscoring single. After a force play-grounder by Teodor Dimitrov, Alexander Blagoev singled and when that was followed by an outfield-error, a run was scored. Later in the at bat, Dimitrov scored the third run on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Dimitrov added a runscoring single, but the team also left three runners behind. Two runs followed in the fifth. The first was scored when a caught stealing-situation ended in an error, then Dundalov added an RBI-single to make it 6-0.

The Russians got into scoring position twice in the first five innings, getting a runner on second base in the second and third at bat. Trailing 6-0, Moskvich scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Georgii Kochnov and Alexander Chernyshov both walked, then Evgeny Libin followed with a runscoring single. The Russians got the bases loaded, but three runners were left behind.

The Buffaloes scored one more run in the eighth on a singly by Dimitrov.

Both teams used only one pitcher. Petyo Petkov struckout six and walked eight batters for Blagoevgrad, while Pavel Maksimov walked ten batters in eight innings for Moskvich.




Apollo Bratislava vs. Sölvesborg Firehawks
Apollo Bratislava broke a 2-2 tie by scoring two runs in the fifth inning, then added another run in the sixth. Swedish opponent Sölvesborg Firehawks narrowed the deficit to 5-4 by scoring a run in the seventh and ninth inning, but was left empty-handed. With this, both Bratislava and Sölvesborg now had won once and lost once.

The Firehawks opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning. Brian Johnson led off with a single and scored the first run on a following double by Kim Hallsten. With two outs, the latter scored the next run on a single by Daniel Johnson.

Bratislava came alongside right away in its first at bat. Martin Brunegraf led off with a walk for the Slovaks, then Richard Gottschall was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Anthony Barreto delivered a 2-run single that tied the score.

The Swedish didn't get much scoring opportunities hereafter, then Bratislava broke the 2-2 tie in the fifth. Brunegraf (fielder's choice) then scored on a sacrifice fly by Gottschall. Another run was added on a single by Jakub Horaček. A single by Denis Paksi made it 5-2 in the sixth inning.

Sölvesborg then was more productive in its last three at bats. In the seventh, a run was scored on an error. Hereafter, the team left runners on second and third base. In the ninth, a single by Evan Porter made it 5-4, but the Swedish again left two runners behind.

Winning pitcher Lukas Zilavy went the distance for Bratislava, striking out five batters.




Deurne Spartans vs. Draci Brno
Draci Brno closed the second day of the tournament with a 2-1 win against Deurne Spartans to remain unbeaten, while the Belgians suffered their first loss.

Brno left a runner on third base in the first at bat and another on first base in the second inning.

The Czechs then opened the score in the top of the third inning off of Dave Van Den Bosch, who went the distance for Deurne. Jakub Hajtmar led off with a bunt-single, then moved on a wild pitch and reached third on a bunt-single by his brother Adam Hajtmar. Moments later, Martin Schneider delivered a runscoring single.

Brno added a run in the fifth. This time, Adam Hajtmar led off with a double. He advanced to third base when 'ball four' for Martin Schneider ended in a wild pitch. Hereafter, Přemek Chroust flied into a double play, but shortly thereafter, Hajtmar scored on another wild pitch to make it 2-1.

In the remainder of the game, the Czechs were held scoreless and got into scoring position only one more time.

The Belgians were retired in order in the second and third inning. The team then got into scoring position in the next two at bats. With two outs in the fourth, Frank Alves Vilacha singled and moved on a wild pitch, but stranded. In the fifth, with one out, Adalberto Vicente walked and Kyle Strauss singled, but the next two batters were retired.

After leaving a runner on first base in the sixth, Deurne scored a run in the seventh. Jason Jie-Sam-Foek led off with a double, moved on a grounder, then scored on a 2-out single by Nick De Vriendt. A pitching change followed, then the latter was forced out.

In the bottom of the eighth, Deurne got another scoring opportunity. Morris De Vriendt led off with a walk and Riugino Jonis singled. But hereafter, reliever Jason Jarvis struckout the next three batters.

In the ninth, still trailing only 2-1, Kyle Strauss walked for Deurne with one out. A strikeout followed, then Strauss was forced out to end the attractive and suspenseful game.
