Southampton and Sant Boi en route to final in Spain

SANT BOI DE LLOBREGAT (Spain) - Host Sant Boi and Southampton Mustangs (Great Britain) more or less secured their spot in the all-deciding final by both winning big on Wednesday (June 22) in the Federations Cup Qualifier. With that, both teams recorded their third victory of the event.

With the win, Southampton clinched a spot in the final, even when the team loses its final two games. On Thursday, the British face Sant Boi then close against last-placed Botosani on Friday. In case of a loss against Sant Boi, Southampton can end up with one or more teams, but the head-to-head result is in their favor. Sant Boi isn't sure yet of a spot in the final. In case the Spanish lose to Southampton, it closes the event on Friday against Barons Wrocław. When that game also is lost, it means the Spanish end up in a tie with the Polish, who then will have won its head-to-head game. In other words, Sant Boi needs a win on Thursday.

On Day 3, there were three big scores.

Southampton Mustangs (Great Britan) opened with a 17-2 win in six innings against Diving Ducks (Austria).
In the afternoon, Therwil Flyers (Switzerland) shutout Barons Wrocław (Poland) 16-0 in six innings.
And in the evening, Sant Boi (Spain) won 18-2 in 5½ inning against Ishido Botosani (Romania).

Southampton Mustangs vs. Diving Ducks
In today's opener, Southampton briefly trailed 1-0 in the second inning, but then rallied for eight runs moments later. The British squad then added nine more runs from the fourth inning to record a comfortable 17-2 win in six innings.

Southampton collected 16 basehits, including three by Maikel Azcuy-Perez, who homered and scored two runs. Azcuy-Perez is a veteran player in British baseball and was named Most Valuable Player of last years National Baseball League.

The Austrians opened the score with one run in the top of the second inning when Clemens Seiser walked with outs and later scored on an error.

The British answered with eight runs in its second at bat on six basehits. Azcuy-Perez started the rally with a lead-off single and closed it with a 2-run homerun. In between, he scored the tying run himself on a double by Giovanni Escalona, followed by a runscoring error, a sacrifice fly, another runscoring error and a 2-run double by Jordan Berger.

The Mustangs added three runs in the fourth at bat, highlighted by a 2-run single by Giovanni Escalona.

A 4-run rally in the fifth inning increased the lead to 15-1. In this at bat, Spencer Kreisberg delivered a 3-run double.

Diving Ducks then scored its second run in the top of the sixth inning on a grounder by Seiser, who accounted for both Austrian runs. Moments later, the Mustangs scored two more runs to reach the 15-run difference needed to end the game via the mercy-rule. With the bases loaded and two outs, both Shaun Macey and Michael Settle were hit by a pitch to bring in a run and end the game.




Barons Wrocław vs. Therwil Flyers
Therwil Flyers registered a big 16-0 victory against Barons Wrocław, but decided the game in the fifth and sixth inning. The Swiss squad led only 2-0 after four innings, but then scored six runs in the fifth and added eight more in the next at bat.

Winning pitcher Stefan Koller gave up only two basehits.

The Flyers opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Michael Stowers was hit by a pitch, stole both second and third base, then scored on a single by Takanobu Oshima. The latter then also stole second base and scored on a single by Sven Leemann, but the Swiss also left three runners behind.

The Polish team left runners on second and third base in its first at bat, but held the Flyers scoreless hereafter.

The Swiss then took more distance by scoring six runs in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Javier Rodriguez delivered a 2-run single and next batter Stefan Koller did the same. An error and a single by Hideori Oshima then completed the rally.

Flyers decided the game with an 8-run rally in the sixth on five basehits. Two runs were scored on a single by Hideori Oshima and later in the at bat, Michael Stowers and Sven Leemann connected for 2-run doubles.




Sant Boi vs. Therwil Flyers
Leading 1-0, Sant Boi rallied for eleven runs in the bottom of the second inning against Botosani to take a commanding lead en route to an 18-2 victory.

The Spanish team collected 15 basehits, including four by Daniel Martinez, who also batted in three runs. Miguel Catalan batted in four runs.

Paul Feliu went the distance for Sant Boi. He struckout eight batters and gave up only six hits, but that included a 2-run homerun by Eduard Pîrvu that accounted for the two Romanian runs in this game.

Sant Boi scored one run in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Jonathan Linares with the bases loaded, but three runners were left behind.

The home team then scored eleven runs on eight hits in the second inning. There were five runscoring doubles in this rally, hit by David Martinez (1-run), Alex Flores (1-run), Daniel Martinez (1-run), Ruben Dario Fente (2-run) and Miguel Catalan (3-run).

Five runs were added in the third inning on four runscoring singles, including a 2-run single by Daniel Martinez.

Trailing 17-0, Botosani got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Sergiu Susana led off with a double, then next batter Eduard Pîrvu followed with a homerun!

Sant Boi scored one more run in its fourth on a grounder.
