UVV vs. HCAW
For seven innings, today's game has some suspense, but also was played under cold conditions and some rain in the first few innings. The score was tied at 2-2 after six innings, then UVV scored twice in the seventh. But the home team then rallied for seven runs in the eighth at to register a big 11-2 score.

UVV collected ten basehits, including three by Dennis Ribbens, who doubled, scored twice and also batted in two runs.

UVV first came close to an opening run in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Jim Ploeger, who last season pitched for the team from Vleuten. The lefthander struckout lead-off hitter Omar Williams, but the third strike was in the ground and a throwing error followed, which enabled him to reach second base. Williams advanced to third base on a grounder by Mike Bazuin, but then was eliminated on a following comeback-grounder by Steven van Reem. Hereafter, Berend Ruben singled and the two runners moved on a wild pitch, but then stranded.

After UVV had turned a double play in the top of the third, they opened the score in the bottom half. Dennis Ribbens led off with a double, moved on a wild pitch, then scored on a grounder by Jamie Verheyleweghen.

UVV turned another double play in the fourth, then HCAW scored twice in the fifth at bat off of Canadian Jeremy Filipek. The righthander gave up a lead-off triple to Kevin Weijgertse. With one out, he beat the throw to the plate on a fielder's choice-grounder to second base by Raoell Kortstam to score the tying run. With two outs, Kortstam stole second and third base, then Jelle Blaauw walked. Blaauw then stole second and when a throwing error followed, Kortstam scored to put HCAW ahead, 2-1. Next batter Marciano Philippi singled, but that also led to the third out, as Blaauw was eliminated in a rundown between third base and home plate.

UVV came alongside in the sixth. Omar Williams led off with a walk, then his pinch-runner Norbert Jongerius stole second base, advanced on a grounder and scored on a single by Steven van Reem. The latter also was replaced by a pinch-runner, Rick Kuipers, who moved to second base on a throwing error after a pick-off, then stole third base, but was left behind when a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Marco Schel took over the HCAW-pitching and made his first appearance of the season. He was greeted with a single by Dennis Ribbens, then gave up a homerun to Julian Rip, his first in the big league and that gave UVV a 4-2 lead.

UVV then rallied for seven runs on only three hits in the bottom of the eighth off of three pitchers, while the HCAW-defense contributed with three errors. Gijs van Els started the inning in relief of Marco Schel, but got the bases loaded. Mike Bazuin reached on an error, moved on a passed ball, then advanced to third base when next batter Jordan Illis also reached on an error. The latter then stole second base and Berend Ruben walked. Hereafter, Tim Niekerk took over with the bases loaded. He walked Sven Jongejans, then gave up a 2-run single to Dennis Ribbens. A force play-grounder by Jamie Verheyleweghen, error on a grounder by Tim Veraghtert, single by Norbert Jongerius and a wild pitch then accounted for the next four runs that lifted the lead to 11-2.

Rookie Rick Heijman threw the ninth inning for UVV and he saw pinch-hitter Gianni Frolijk reach on an error. With one out, rookie Pascal Zegwaard was inserted as pinch-hitter for Vince Rooi. In the previous two games, he was used as a pinch-runner, but now he got his first big league at bat and delivered a single. Moments later, he was eliminated when Kevin Weijgertse grounded into a game-ending double play.
