Another rookie pitcher wins for Amsterdam Pirates
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) -
Less than 24 hours after rookie Jimmy Osinga made his first big league-start and won, L&D Amsterdam Pirates had another surprise starting pitcher on Saturday-afternoon (June 25) in its second game against Pickles UVV.
This time, Hidde Brocken, another rookie, started for the team, went six-plus innings and also earned his first victory.
Amsterdam's pitching staff is currently struck by injuries.
Ace Kevin Heijstek is out for the season after sustaining a severe injury during the victorious final of the European Champions Cup-tournament three weeks ago in Italy.
Veteran righthander Rob Cordemans is still recovering from a shoulder-injury and hasn't pitched yet this season.
Besides that, Kyle Ward and Dennis Burgersdijk, the number 2 and 3 starters in the 3-man rotation, also have minor surgeries and will not pitch in this series.
And so, two pitchers from the club's Rookie League-team were added to the big league-staff.
Osinga made his debut a week ago, pitching one inning in relief.
He made his first big league-start on Friday-evening.
Today, Brocken made his big league-debut.
With that, Amsterdam realized a rare accompishment, as two rookie pitchers made their first big league-start in two consecutive games, both pitched 5-plus innings and both were winning pitcher.
Offensively, Danny Rombley contributed with three basehits (one double) and scored one run.
