Sölvesborg second finalist in Federations Cup-tournament

BRNO (Czech Rep.) - Sölvesborg Firehawks is the second finalist in the Federations Cup-tournament. On Saturday (June 25), the Swedish team won 10-3 against Deurne Spartans, which appeared to be the favorite to reach the final in the previous days.

Sölvesborg now will meet host Draci Brno in the final on Sunday.

In the afternoon on Day 5 of the tournament, Buffaloes Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria) won 14-13 against Apollo Bratislava (Slovakia).

In the evening, Draci Brno closed the preliminary round with a big 19-2 win against Moskvich (Russia).

Deurne Spartans vs. Sölvesborg Firehawks
Deurne Spartans lost only 2-1 to Draci Brno, while Sölvesborg suffered a 20-2 loss against the Czechs. With, the Belgians were favored to reach to final, but surprisingly lost in today's first game, which started at 10 AM.

Sölvesborg registered a convincing 10-3 win on 15 basehits and decided the game with a 5-run rally in the first inning. Daniel Johnson went 5-for-5 for the Swedes, scored two runs and batted in one.

Sölvesborg reached base quickly in the top of the first inning off of starter Morris De Vriendt. A single and two walks loaded the bases, then a walk for Joel Johnson opened the score. A runscoring single by Daniel Johnson followed, then the third run was scored when next batter Johannes Kallfors was hit by a pitch. With still no outs and the bases loaded, Nick De Vriendt took over the pitching. He began with a runscoring walk for Kevin Kias. A double play followed, but that also brought in the fifth run.

The Swedes added three more runs in the fourth to lift the lead to 8-0.

Deurne scored its first run in the sixth inning when Riugino Jonis homered with one out. Both teams then scored two runs in the eighth inning.




Buffaloes Blagoevgrad vs. Apollo Bratislava
In a suspenseful game, Buffaloes Blagoevgrad led 7-0 after five innings, but trailed 13-12 halfway the ninth inning against Apollo Bratislava. The Bulgarians then scored two runs to win 14-13.

Deniz Dimitrov went 4-for-5 for Blagoevgrad, scored three runs and batted in four to have a major contribution the victory.

Leading 1-0, the Bulgarians rallied for five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a 2-run double by Dimitrov.

Trailing 7-0, it was Bratislava that scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning, with two of them being scored on a single by Lukáš Zilavý.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Buffaloes scored three more runs to raise their lead to 10-5.

However, Bratislava then score two runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to narrow the deficit to only 10-9.

In the bottom of the eighth, singles by Deniz Dimitrov and Alexander Blagoev made it 12-9 in favor of the Bulgarian squad.

The 3-run lead was not enough, as Bratislava scored four runs in the top of the ninth. A 2-run single by Matuš Repaský made it 12-11, then a single by Martin Roman tied the score. A double by Jakub Horaček made it 13-12 to give Bratislava its first lead in the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, lead-off hitter Yasen Nedelchev was hit by a pitch. He then scored all the way from first base when a throwing error followed on a sacrifice bunt by Hristo Dundalov. He ended up on third base, then scored the winning run on a walk-off single by Petar Petrov.




Moskvich vs. Draci Brno
In the evening, Draci Brno closed with a 19-2 victory in five innings against Moskvich, which remained winless. Leading 9-2, the Czechs rallied for ten runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Adam Hajtmar (two doubles) and Martin Schneider (three doubles) both had three basehits, scored three runs and batted in three runs for Brno. Arnošt Dubový batted in four runs.

After both teams had scored two runs in the first inning, Brno rallied for six runs in the second at bat. In the inning, four extra basehits accounted for the runs. First, Adam Hajtmar doubled in a run, then Martin Schneider followed with a 2-run double. Hereafter, Přemek Chroust delivered a runscoring triple. Later in the at bat, two runs were added on a double by František Vašourek.

Brno added a run in the third inning, then staged a 10-run rally on nine hits in the fourth inning. Three runs were scored on a triple by Arnošt Dubový, which was followed by back-to-back RBI-doubles by Adam Hajtmar and Martin Schneider. With two outs, veteran Pavel Budský and Tomáš Polanský also hit back-to-back runscoring doubles.
