Neptunus nips Pirates to reach Holland Series
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) -
Curaçao Neptunus nipped L&D Amsterdam Pirates 4-3 in the opener of its 3-game series on Thursday-evening (August 25) to become the first team to reach the Holland Series.
The second finalist will either be Amsterdam Pirates or Vaessen Pioniers.
The latter tonight turned a deficit into a 5-4 win against Kinheim.
A loss would have meant that Amsterdam also would have qualified for the Championship Final.
Pioniers needs to sweep Kinheim to reach the Holland Series, while Pirates needs one win to become the second finalist.
Neptunus opened the score with two runs in the first inning on singles by Gianison Boekhoudt and Dashenko Ricardo.
Boekhoudt returned to the line-up after being hit on his hand last weekend.
Initially, it was though that there might be a fracture, but that isn't the case.
After Amsterdam got a run back in the second at bat, Neptunus added runs in the third and fourth, the last one being scored on a throwing error.
Amsterdam narrowed the deficit to only 4-3 on a 2-run double by Michael Duursma.
But there also was a crucial double play in this inning, as a runner was ruled out on appeal for leaving second base too early after a flyout.
