Vaessen Pioniers vs. Pickles UVV
UVV struggled with some injuries in recent weeks, but tonight Dennis Ribbens returned to the line-up.
The Belgian player has been a solid short stop for the squad and that is where he played again tonight.
UVV got a chance to open the score in the first at bat off of Lars Huijer, but failed to do so.
With one out, Berend Ruben singled and Tony Enos walked.
The latter was forced out on a grounder by Omar Williams, but that brought Ruben to third base.
Moments later, Williams stole second base, but a strikeout then ended the inning.
In its first at bat off of Gilian van Lith, Max Draijer singled with one out for Pioniers, but he was caught stealing moments later in a rundown following a pick-off.
In the second inning, Sven Jongejans doubled for UVV with two outs and moved to third base on a following outfield-error, but then stranded.
Pioniers then opened the score in the bottom of the second inning.
Quintin De Cuba led off with a single, stole second base, then scored on a 2-out single by Shurman Marlin.
Pioniers added two runs in the third inning.
Stephen Henson led off with a walk and Zerzinho Croes singled.
The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Max Draijer, then respectively scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Weymouth and a double by Quintin De Cuba.
Pioniers made it a 5-0 score in the fourth.
Shurman Marlin led off with a walk and Mark Smit singled.
Stephen Henson followed with a force play-grounder that led to the elimination of Smit, but when a throwing error followed trying to complete a double play, Marlin scored.
Henson advanced on the error, then stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zerzinho Croes to make it 5-0.
Lars Huijer retired the side in the top of the fifth inning (two strikeouts), but then gave up UVV's lone run in the sixth.
Tony Enos led off with a single, moved on a grounder by Omar Williams and scored on a 2-out single by Mike Bazuin.
UVV got another baserunner when Sergino Martis also singled, but a flyout then ended the at bat after Quinn Tramm had taken over the pitching.
Pioniers then decided the game with a 5-run rally in the seventh inning.
With one out, the bases got loaded when Austin Weymouth and Quintin De Cuba singled and Kevin Dirksen walked.
Brennan Nijhof followed with a runscoring single and another run was scored when next batter Shurman Marlin walked.
That led to another pitching change and Kevin van Veen took over.
He was greeted with a runscoring, pinch-hit single by Shavently Profar that brought in two runners.
The following run was scored on a force play-grounder by pinch-hitter Mervin Gario to lift the lead to 10-1.
UVV got a final chance to add a run in the top of the ninth, but in the end left three runners behind.
Jonatan Isenia became the new pitcher for Pioniers, taking over for reliever Maickel Rietel (who had replaced Huijer in the previous at bat).
Isenia walked Mike Bazuin and Sergino Martis, followed with a strikeout, but then got the bases loaded when he also walked Dennis Ribbens.
The former pro was then replaced by Jonah Van Bemmelen and he retired the next two batters to end the game.
