Borgerhout wins Federations Cup Qualifier in London

LONDON, England (Great Britain) - Borgerhout Squirrels won the Federations Cup Qualifier in London on Sunday (June 26) by winning the final against Stal Kutno (Poland) with a big 17-4 score.

With the win, Belgium promotes to the Federations Cup-tournament. That event ended today in Brno with teams from Slovakia and Russia finishing in the last two positions. These countries will play in a Qualifier next year. Besides Belgium, Spain also will be represented in next year Federations Cup, as Sant Boi won the other Qualifier on Saturday.

Alexis Marquez of Borgerhout was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Stefan Beshkov (Sofia Blues) won the Best Pitcher Award, while Jakub Wojtczak (Stal Kutno) was the Best Hitter with a .647 batting average.

Final Standings
1. Borgerhout Squirrels (Belgium), 2. Stal Kutno (Poland), 3. London Mets (Great Britain), 4. Sofia Blues (Bulgaria), 5. Atletico Alexandria (Romania).

Borgerhout Squirrels vs. Stal Kutno
In the final, Borgerhout faced a quick 3-0 deficit in the top of the first inning and trailed 4-2 halfway the second at bat. But the Belgians then held the Polish team scoreless, came alongside in the bottom of the second and added 13 more runs in the following innings to win 17-4 in 6½ inning.

Stal Kutno rallied for three runs on five hits in the top of the first inning off of starter Alexis Marquez. With two outs and a runner on second base, Robert Matecki delivered a runscoring double. Singles by Mateusz Serafin and Kacper Kaminski then lifted the lead to 3-0.

Borgerhout got two runs back in its first at bat off of starter Artur Wojtczak. A triple by Steven De Lannoy and a sacrifice fly by Alexis Marquez made it 3-2. But in the second inning, Kutno scored another run on a wild pitch.

In the remainder of the game, Kutno was held scoreless, while Borgerhout turned the game its way and scored a lot of runs.

In the bottom of the second, the Belgians came alongside, thanks to singles by De Lannoy and Marquez. Borgerhout then took a 6-4 lead by scoring two more runs in the third on a wild pitch and an error.

Borgerhout rallied for five runs in the fourth to take more distance. In this at bat, six hits were registered. Four more runs were then scored in the fifth, highlighted by a 2-run double by De Lannoy.

A 2-run double by Drew Janssen lifted the lead to 17-4 in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Kutno got the bases loaded with two outs, but reliever Joannes Ochoa then ended the game with a strikeout.
