Andrea Marcon new President of Italian Baseball & Softball Federation

SALSOMAGGIORE TERME, Parma (Italy) -
Andrea Marcon has been elected as the new President of the Federazione Italiana Baseball Softball (Italian Baseball Softball Federation) during the Ordinary National Assembly on Saturday (November 26) at Centro Congressi in Salsomaggiore Terme in the Province of Parma.
The former (international) softball-umpire succeeds Riccardo Fraccari, who led the FIBS since 2001.
Fraccari (who a former international baseball-umpire) is the President of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) since May 2014 after being the President of the International BAseball Federation (IBAF) since December 2009.
Marcon was one of three candidates for the presidency.
During the election, Marcon received 6.165 votes (51.33%), while (Vice-President) Massimo Fochi received 5.825 (48.66%) votes.
Alberto Antolini was the third candidate.
In his first speech after being elected, Marcon thanked both Fochi and Antolini, then wished everyone a good future in baseball and softball.
Marcon has been elected for a period of four years, which runs from 2017 through 2020.
Andrea Marcon was born in Montréal (Canada) in 1973 as a son of Italian immigrants.
He returned to Italy at age eight.
When Marcon first became involved in softball, he was a scorekeeper, then became a coach in youth softball.
In 1993, Marcon became an umpire and went on to become a well-respected international softball-umpire.
He retired as an umpire in 2010 and became the Umpiring Director of the European Softball Federation (ESF) in 2011.
Some years ago, Marcon founded Enjoy It!, which organizes (international) softball-events in the region Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Amongst these events are the Olympic Qualiftying Tournament in 2007 and the European Championship in 2011.
Both events were won by the Netherlands Softball Team.
By winning the tournament in 2007, the Orange squad qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing (China).
Four years later, the Netherlands Team captured its second consecutive European title, while remaining unbeaten.
Amongst his international tournaments as umpire the Women's Softball World Championship in Caracas and Maracay (Venezuela) in 2010, the Women's Softball Junior World Championship in Enschede (Netherlands) in 2007 and the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City (USA) in 2009.
