Pioniers wins Jan van de Vegte Memorial
Nederlands

NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - On Sunday (March 27), Vaessen Pioniers has won the 28th edition of the MJFP Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament in Nijmegen, which is hosted annually by De Hazenkamp.

Due to the rain overnight, the second and final day of the event went underway 75 minutes later than planned, but both games could be played as scheduled.

In the first game today, HCAW won 9-2 against De Hazenkamp, breaking a 2-2 tie with a 5-run rally in the third inning.

Later in the afternoon Vaessen Pioniers win big against HCAW, 19-1 to become the tournament winner, which it also won in 2013. HCAW finished in second place, host De Hazenkamp in third place.

This year, only three teams participated. With that, four instead of six games were played, two on each day. Big league-teams Pioniers and HCAW were given the opportunity to play three games, while host De Hazenkamp played two. Pioniers and HCAW faced each other on both Saturday and Sunday.

Last year, all games on Day 2 rained out and a tournament-winner was not declared.

Coming weekend, HCAW will host its annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament at its home site in Bussum. The event opens on Friday-evening. Participating are Vaessen Pioniers, L&D Amsterdam Pirates, Kinheim and host HCAW.

The regular season opens on Thursday, April 14.

In the top of the first inning, HCAW scored twice off of starter Djardan Graveth. Boyd Tuhumury led off with a double, then the bases got loaded with one out when Rossini Frolijk was hit by a pitch and Kevin Nieveld walked. A wild pitch then led to the first run and the bases were re-loaded with two outs when Jelle Blaauw walked. The second run was then scored when next batter Dalvin Kortstam also walked, but hereafter three runners were left behind.

In the bottom of the first inning, off of HCAW-starter Ian Delemarre, De Hazenkamp came alongside. Steffen Vos led off with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Samuel van Beek and scored on a following single by Robbert Lafferty. The latter moved when Dylan Kamoen walked, then advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a single by Wesley Kamoen. Hereafter, Bas Timmer also singled, but that led to an out as the plate, as Dylan Kamoen tried to score, but was eliminated there on the throw from the outfield. De Hazenkamp left two runners behind. The team got more runners in scoring position in the remainder of the game, but failed to add more runs.

HCAW stranded a runner on second base in the second inning, then rallied for five runs in the third. With one out and Raoell Kortstam (fielder's choice) on first base, Jelle Blaauw singled. The two runners moved on a wild pitch, then a grounder by Dalvin Kortstam led to the go-ahead run. Walks for Gianni Frolijk and Julian Goins loaded the bases. Boyd Tuhumury then followed with a 2-run double and Levine Gabriëls added a 2-run single to lift the lead to 7-2.

In the fourth inning, off of new pitcher Garrelt Klaassen, HCAW got the bases loaded with one out, but the inning then ended when Julian Goins grounded into an 1-2-3 double play.

HCAW added two runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Levine Gabriëls tripled and scored on a following double by Rossini Frolijk, who then scored on a single by Kevin Nieveld. Hereafter, HCAW got the bases loaded, but a force out at home and a flyout then ended the inning.

De Hazenkamp also got the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth off of Marco Schel, who had taken over in the previous inning. With one out, Wesley Kamoen (who was 3-for-3) doubled, then Bas Timmer reached on an error and with two outs, Robbert Vos walked. But a force out on third base ended the at bat and the game.

Pioniers concluded the 2-day event with another big victory. On Saturday, the Hoofddorp-team won 31-1 against host De Hazenkamp and now it closed with a 19-1 win vs. HCAW, to whom it had lost 3-2 on a walk-off walk the day before. The biggest score in recent years of the tournament was RCH winning 21-2 vs. Sparks Haarlem in 2007.

In this game, Pioniers collected 15 basehits, including three by Mervin Gario, who also batted in three runs. In the off-season, Gario returned to Pioniers after having played for Kinheim In the previous four seasons.

Smit then scored the first run on a grounder by Mervin Gario. Quintin De Cuba (with one out) and Shurman Marlin (with two outs) followed with runscoring singles to make it 3-0.

Timmermans recovered and encountered no problems in the next two innings, but then Pioniers added three more runs in the fourth off of new pitcher Jim Ploeger. The lefthander walked Glenn Bakker and Brennan Nijhof. Hereafter, Stephen Henson singled, which was followed by an outfield-error, resulting in a run. With one out, an error on a grounder by Zerzinho Croes and a sacrifice fly by Mervin Gario lifted the lead to 6-0.

Nick Keur made his first start for Pioniers. He gave up an one-out single to Roelie Henrique in the first inning, but then picked him off first base. In the second, he walked Kevin Weijgertse, but he stranded. In the third, Keur walked Boyd Tuhumury with one out, but then a double play followed.

American-Dutch pitcher Jonah Van Bemmelen, who had arrived on Friday, then made his debut for Pioniers when he took over in the fourth inning. The righthanded submarine-pitcher retired the side, but then gave up HCAW's lone run in the fifth. He gave up a lead-off single to Kevin Weijgertse, who then scored when Julian Goins followed with a triple. Hereafter, Van Bemmelen retired the next three batters, including two with a strikeout.

Pioniers again scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Dirksen led off with a homerun off of Ploeger, who then got the bases loaded via two walks and a single. A single by Stephen Henson then brought in a run and also brought in Tim Niekerk as reliever for Ploeger. A double play-grounder by Shavently Profar then brought in the next run.

In the sixth, Pioniers rallied for ten runs on six basehits. All nine batters reached base in this at bat at least once, five of them twice. Mervin Gario had two basehits and scored twice. Gario led off the rally with a single off of Niekerk, then the bases got loaded when Quintin De Cuba and Kevin Dirksen walked. Shurman Marlin was then hit by a pitch to bring in a run. With one out, a sacrifice fly by Brennan Nijhof brought in the next run. The bases were re-loaded when Stephen Henson walked and another walk for Shavently Profar then led to the next run and a pitching change. Gijs van Els took over. The lefthander gave up a 2-run single to Austin Weymouth, then a runscoring single by Mervin Gario. An error on a grounder by De Cuba and a single by Dirksen produced the next two runs and brought in another pitcher. Leftfielder Kevin Nieveld took over, but he saw two more runs scored on a single by Shurman Marlin and a hit batter for Brennan Nijhof with the bases loaded. Pioniers then left the bases loaded, but had increased its lead to 19-1.
