ROTTERDAM (Neth.) -
Curaçao Neptunus won 5-1 on Saturday (August 27) against L&D Amsterdam Pirates in the second game of their 3-game series.
With this, Amsterdam Pirates was left empty-handed for the second time in three days.
Amsterdam needs one victory, or a loss by Vaessen Pioniers, to become the second team to qualify for the Holland Series.
Last Thursday, Neptunus reached the Championship Final first by winning against Amsterdam.
In case both Pirates and Pioniers lose on Sunday, Pirates will advance based on the head-to-head results during the Play-Offs against Pioniers (2-1).
When both teams win on Sunday, Pirates also will reach the Final.
In case Pioniers win and Pirates also ends up losing on Sunday, Pioniers will become the second finalist.
Neptunus-starter Orlando Yntema limited Amsterdam to only two basehits in the seven innings he was on the mound.
The righthander walked five batters, but he got some fine support from his defense, as well as the offense of the Rotterdam-squad.
Neptunus scored twice in the first inning off of Robin Schel on three basehits, but also left three runners behind.
Trailing 2-0, Pirates got the bases loaded with one out in the third inning, but then a double play followed.
Neptunus also turned a double play in the fourth and sixth inning.
Neptunus was held scoreless from the second inning on, but then added two runs in the seventh on grounders by Raily Legito and Gianison Boekhoudt.
A basesloaded walk for Urving Kemp accounted for another run in the eighth.
Amsterdam scored its lone run in the ninth off of closer Loek van Mil.
Gilmer Lampe then led off with a double and scored on a grounder.
Some two hours before the start of the game, there was an unexpected change in the umpiring assignments.
Jos van Eijsden was to be the 3B Umpire, but he encountered a problem while traveling to Rotterdam by train, as it stopped midway.
With that, Van Eijsden could not be in time in Rotterdam and was replaced by Roy van de Wateringen, who initially was to be the 3B Umpire at the game between HCAW and De Glaskoning Twins.
So, Van de Wateringen changed directions and instead of traveling to Bussum, he went to Rotterdam.
That left the game in Bussum with a 2-man crew.
