Curaçao Neptunus vs. HCAW
It was another cold evening with a windchill of 3,9 degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit) in the Amsterdam/Haarlem-area and 4,9 (40,8 F) in the Rotterdam/Dordrecht-area.
But despite that, and some rain earlier in the day and on previous days, all games could be played as scheduled.
Neptunus reached base frequently in the first four innings, but scored only twice.
Those runs were scored in the first inning, but the Rotterdam-squad failed to the take more distance and that allowed HCAW to crawl closer and take over the lead in the fourth at bat.
In the first inning, off of starter Kaj Timmermans, Dwayne Kemp led off with a walk, but was caught stealing moments later.
Hereafter, a 9-pitch at bat followed for Benjamin Dille, who fouled off four pitches.
During his at bat, there are were five pick-off moves towards first base when Kemp was still there.
After Kemp was eliminated, Dille walked, then Raily Legito singled.
With one out, the bases got loaded when Christian Diaz singled.
Hereafter, Dashenko Ricardo also singled to bring in two runners.
A flyout ended the at bat and Neptunus stranded two runners.
In the second inning, Neptunus got the bases loaded with two outs.
Dwayne Kemp and Benjamin Dille singled, then Raily Legito walked, but they all were left behind.
Diegomar Markwell started for Neptunus, but needed a lot of pitches tonight (106) in the five innings he threw.
With one out in the second inning, he walked Julian Goins, but he was caught stealing.
A single by Kevin Nieveld followed, but he was left behind.
After stranding a runner on second base in the third inning, HCAW struck with three runs in the fourth at bat.
Markwell walked Vince Rooi, then gave up a single to Kevin Weijgertse.
Hereafter, Julian Goins singled in a run to make it a 2-1 score.
Markwell followed with a strikeout, then gave up a single to Raoell Kortstam that loaded the bases.
Markwell then struckout his sixth batter, but next batter Gianni Frolijk connected for a 2-run single that gave HCAW a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, HCAW got another scoring opportunity, but failed to add more runs.
Roelie Henrique and Vince Rooi began with singles.
The first was forced out on a bunt by next batter Kevin Weijgertse, then HCAW left two runners moments later.
From the third inning on, Neptunus was unable to get into scoring position through the fifth.
In the sixth, they left runners on first and second base.
But in the seventh, Neptunus managed to come alongside.
Benjamin Dille led off with a single and Raily Legito also singled, which led to a pitching change.
Gijs van Els took over for Timmermans, but he was greeted with a runscoring single by Gianison Boekhoudt that made it a 3-3 score.
With two outs, the bases got loaded when Rien Vernooij walked.
Another pitching change followed, as Giovanni Tensen was brought in.
Neptunus then again failed to take more distance, as three runners were left behind when Tensen closed with a strikeout.
In the sixth inning, Markwell was relieved by Bayron Cornelisse, who threw three solid innings and didn't allow HCAW to get into scoring position.
In the bottom of the eighth, Neptunus decided the game.
Urving Kemp led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Dwayne Kemp.
Next batter Benjamin Dille hit a pop-fly into foul territory where first baseman Kevin Weijgertse and second baseman Roelie Henrique went after, but were unsuccessful.
While trying to catch the ball, Henrique slipped and was hit by the ball on his back.
He briefly remained lying on the ground, but was able to continue playing.
Moments later, Dille walked, then a single by Raily Legito followed to give Neptunus a 4-3 lead.
A sacrifice fly by Gianison Boekhoudt made it 5-3.
In the top of the ninth inning, Kevin Kelly closed for Neptunus.
He struckout the side to complete the come-from-behind victory and earn his second save.
