BUSSUM (Neth.) -
Roy Berrevoets has been named the new Head Coach of the Dutch big league baseball-team of HCAW, ending the longest coachless drought for the club in history.
Berrevoets and HCAW finalized the agreement in the weekend and the club officially announced his appointment on Monday (February 29).
Berrevoets succeeds Ralph Milliard.
He led the team for the first time last year, but both parties separated in September.
Since then, the search for a new Head Coach started and it took five months to find a successor.
The rest of the coaching staff will be announced later.
In the end, it wasn't that difficult to find a new Head Coach, as Roy Berrevoets has a long history with the Bussum-based club.
He not only played there, he also acted as a coach.
The past seasons, Berrevoets was the Head Coach of the so-called 'Reserve Reserves'-team of the club, which is the third highest team within the organization in which he himself also played for some years.
He will continue to be the Head Coach of that team also during the upcoming season.
On seven occasions, both teams will play on the same date, but Berrevoets then will be with the main squad.
In the past off-season, Berrevoets was closely involved compiling the current roster of the big league-team of HCAW, which is scheduled to play its first exhibition game coming weekend.
Last year, HCAW finished in seventh place in both the first half and second half of the season, closing with a 10-30 record and two ties.
After completion of the season, it was announced that Bench Coach Marlon Frolijk, Pitching Coach Robbert Keetelaar and Assistant Coach Joost Calis also would not return this year.
In the off-season, Frolijk was named Head Coach of RCH-Pinguïns, which plays in the second highest division ('Overgangsklasse').
After having started playing baseball in youth-teams at Giants Diemen, Roy Berrevoets made his debut in the big league at age 17 during the 1987 season playing for HCAW, where he played his entire big league-career.
With HCAW, Berrevoets played in five Holland Series (1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999) and he won the Dutch Championship-title twice (1996, 1998).
He ended his active career after completion of the 1999 season, but appeared in one more game in 2000 and 2004.
His uniform number 24 was retired some years ago.

Berrevoets, who was a first baseman, played for the Netherlands National Team in 1997.
In that year, he participated with the Orange squad in the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam (Netherlands) and the European Championship in Paris (France).
In the French capital, the Netherlands, which was the reigning European champion, lost its title, losing the then best-of-five final against Italy.
Berrevoets already has been the Head Coach of HCAW in the past, as he led the squad in 2007 and 2008.
Under his leadership, HCAW finished in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Towards the end of his second year, Berrevoets announced that he wouldn't return for a third season.
In October 2008, Berrevoets was succeeded by Jurjan Koenen, who had been his Assistant Coach.
After retiring as Head Coach, Berrevoets remained active for the club as a scout and advisor.
He returned in uniform during the 2011 season when he became the interim-Assistant Coach of Ronald Jaarsma, who took over as Head Coach in June of that year, succeeding Bill Froberg.
HCAW has a long history with different coaches.
Since it first played in the highest division in 1967, thirty different coaches have led the team.
Berrevoets becomes the sixth coach to be Head Coach of HCAW for the second time.
The others are Jan Schriek (who led HCAW in three different periods), Craig Montvidas, Cees Herkemij, Dave Daniels and Bill Froberg.
Roy's father Adrie Berrevoets was the team's scorekeeper for many years and nowadays is a loyal spectator of HCAW's games.
