Pickles UVV vs. Vaessen Pioniers
UVV committed eight errors in today's game, which was the highest total this season in the Dutch big league.
Last season, the most errors made in a game by one team was seven, which happened twice.
The last time, eight errors were made, was on May 31, 2014 and was done by Mampaey The Hawks in a game against ADO Lakers.
On Saturday, UVV committed four errors, resulting in six unearned runs (of the eight they gave up).
Today, the team again gave up six unearned runs.
UVV leads the league with 58 errors.
The second highest total is 39, made by HCAW.
So far this season, UVV has played only one game without making an error.
Just as they did on Saturday, Pioniers scored four runs with two outs in the first inning.
This was disastrous at bat for UVV defensively, as it committed five errors.
Despite that, UVV was able to come alongside in the third inning when Pioniers made two errors.
In the top of the first inning, Pioniers lead-off hitter Zerzinho Croes reached on an error and stole second base.
He advanced on a grounder, then scored when Max Draijer also grounded out.
Next batter Quintin De Cuba singled and Brian Raap reached on an error.
Glenn Bakker followed with a runscoring single, then an outfield-error then led to another run.
Hereafter, Shurman Marlin was the next batter to reach base on an error and that brought in the fourth run.
Marlin later advanced when a pick-off at first base ended in the fifth error and he moved to third base on a single by Brennan Nijhof.
The inning ended when starter Timo van Ancum closed with a strikeout.
Van Ancum retired the side in the second inning, as did his reliever Jeremy Filipek in the third.
UVV left a runner behind on second base in the first inning off of starter Nick Keur, then was retired in order (two strikeouts) in the second.
The home team then came alongside in the bottom of the third inning.
Three runs were unearned, due to two errors.
Lead-off hitter Sven Jongejans reached second base on a dropped fly ball in the outfield.
The bases got loaded when Dennis Ribbens and Berend Ruben (with one out) walked.
Tony Enos followed with a 2-run double, then two more runs were added when next batter Steven van Reem reached on a fielding error to make it a 4-4 score.
The three middle innings remained scoreless.
In that span, Pioniers left a runner at first base twice, while UVV left four runners behind in scoring position.
In the top of the seventh inning, Pioniers again scored four runs to re-take the lead.
Lead-off hitter Shavently Profar was hit by a pitch, but was forced out on a grounder by Zerzinho Croes.
The latter stole second base, then advanced on a pinch-hit single by Mervin Gario and went on to score the go-ahead run on a pinch-hit single by Austin Weymouth.
With two outs, Brian Raap delivered a 2-run triple and later scored himself on a passed ball to make it an 8-4 score.
In the bottom of the seventh, UVV got two runs back off of reliever Jonah Van Bemmelen, who took over for starter Nick Keur.
The side-armer got the bases loaded when he walked Jordan Illis and Berend Ruben, then gave up a single to Tony Enos.
When pinch-hitter Omar Williams followed with a runscoring single, Van Bemmelen was replaced by Maickel Rietel.
He was greeted with a sacrifice fly by Mike Bazuin that narrowed the deficit to 8-6, but then retired the next two batters.
Pioniers scored its next run in the eighth off of Tony Enos, who then took over the pitching for UVV.
Mark Smit led off as pinch-hitter and singled.
He stole second base, advanced on an error, then scored on a single by Shavently Profar.
UVV also scored in the eighth.
It got the bases loaded when Sven Jongejans, Dennis Ribbens and Jordan Illis all singled.
Hereafter, Berend Ruben lined into a double play, but Jongejans later scored on a wild pitch.
Leading 9-7, Sedley Karel closed the game again for Pioniers.
He retired the side (two strikeouts) to earn his league-leading fifth save of the season.
