Neptunus registers another small win against UVV
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) -
Curaçao Neptunus led 4-0 in the seventh inning, then gave up three runs, but went on to win 5-3 against Pickles UVV on Sunday (July 31) to complete a 3-game sweep.
Neptunus got a chance to take a big lead in the top of the first inning when UVV-starter Gilian van Lith was unable to find the strike-zone.
In a 12-minute at bat, the lefthander delivered 33 pitches with only nine of them being a strike.
He walked five batters and hit another, but in the end, Neptunus scored only two runs.
After two innings, UVV even briefly outhit Neptunus, 1-0.
In the next two at bats, Neptunus collected five hits and added two runs.
From the second inning on, 14 consecutive UVV-batters were retired in order, but then the team suddenly scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after a pitching change.
In the top of the eighth, Neptunus scored an insurance run on a basesloaded walk.
In the ninth, UVV had runners on second and third base off of closer Loek van Mil, who struckout three batters to end the game.
In the top of the sixth, Neptunus filed a protest, stating that UVV had made a double visit to the mound, first by the Assistant Coach, then by the Head Coach of UVV.
Coaches are prohibited from making a second visit to the same pitcher while the same batter is at bat, unless a pinch-hitter is inserted.
In the sixth, with runners on first and third base and one out, coach Joris van Ballegooy visited reliever Thijs Steenwijk, then left the mound to return to the dug-out.
A visit is considered to have been concluded when a coach leaves the pitching circle around the mound.
While Van Ballegooy was on his way back, Head Coach Ferenc Jongejan came out, also visited Steenwijk and brought in a new pitcher.
When a double visit is made, the pitcher cannot be changed and is required to pitch to the batter until he is retired or gets on base.
Hereafter, the pitcher then has to be removed.
As Neptunus won the game, the protest was withdrawn again.
