UVV announces transfers for coming season
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Pickles UVV has announced its transfers for the coming season. On Sunday (October 30), RTV Utrecht first reported the comings and goings of the team, which were later confirmed.

The transfer-deadline end coming Tuesday, November 1, at 5 PM. After the deadline has expired, Grand Slam * Stats & News will publish its annual overview with all transfers of all eight teams in the Dutch big league.

UVV has added nine new players, including four pitchers, to its roster and saw seven players leave the club. Amongst the newcomers are two players from 'neighbouring' HCAW and also two from 'neighbouring' Robur '58, plus two players, who will make their comeback in the Dutch big league. Of the players that left the team, two will play for both DSS and De Glaskoning Twins next season.

This year was not that successful for UVV, as it finished in seventh place in the Overall Standings with a 9-33 record. In the second half of the season, it even ended up in eighth and last place. UVV then secured its spot in next years big league by finishing in third place in the Play-Downs, winning five of its nine games. The team was bothered by several injuries to some key defensive players, including short stop Dennis Ribbens, first baseman Jamie Verheyleweghen, outfielder Julian Rip and infielder/pitcher Tony Enos, who therefore all missed several games.

In August, it was announced that Head Coach Ferenc Jongejan woudl step down after completion of the season. The former pitcher had led the team since 2013. In his four seasons with the team, he led UVV to fifth place in his first three years. Led by Jongejan, UVV won its most games in his first season (2013), as it then was 17-25 to finish in fifth place.

Jongejan will be succeeded as Head Coach by American Ty Eriksen, who this season was an outfielder playing for Munich-Haar Disciples in the highest German league. He also played with the team in the inaugural season of Euro League Baseball.

Two of the four pitchers coming to UVV made their debut in the Dutch big league this season, being righthander Jimmy Osinga and American righthander Jonah Van Bemmelen.

Van Bemmelen played this season for Vaessen Pioniers for whom he pitched in 18 games, mostly as middle reliever. In seven of these games, he was used as closer. The sidearm/submarine-pitcher was 0-0 with no saves and an 8.44 ERA. The righthander struckout 15 batters and walked 12 in 16 innings.

Osinga played the majority of the season in the Rookie League Team of L&D Amsterdam Pirates. With the main-squad, he participated in the European Champions Cup-tournament early June in Italy and San Marino. There, he captured the European Cup with Pirates and closed on game, earning a save. He was then one of two pitchers from the Rookie League Team to be added to the main squad shortly thereafter due to several injuries in the pitching staff. On June 28, Osinga made his debut in the Dutch big league. The righthander appeared in four regular season games of Amsterdam, including two starts, and was 1-0. He struckout three batters in 9 1/3 inning, but also walked six.

Two players are coming to UVV from HCAW, catcher Julian Goins and infielder Jelle Blaauw.

This year, Goins played in his first season for HCAW after having come to Bussum from Mampaey The Hawks, which relegated in 2015. Goins, who mostly played as catcher, but was also used in the outfield, batted .221 (21-for-95) with three doubles. In 34 games, he scored 13 runs and batted in six, while finishing with a .981 fielding average.

Blaauw mostly played as short stop for the Bussum-squad. The infielder played in 34 games and closed the regular season with an .169 batting average (11-for-65) with all his basehits being singles. Blaauw scored 13 runs and batted in four, but also walked 17 times.

Two players will return in the big league next year, being catcher Rodney Daal and infielder Randy Daal. The two brothers last played in the highest division in 2011, when both played for HCAW, for whom they also played in the previous season. After completion of the 2011 season, Randy Daal returned to Almere '90, where he has played since 2012. Rodney Daal then transfered to UVV, but never played for the team, as he had started a professional career in the USA.

Before transfering to Almere, Randy Daal had played four seasons for HCAW after already having played two years for Almere '90, which also played in the Dutch big league. Daal, who is a first baseman and middle infileder, earlier played in the big league for Amsterdam Pirates and Kinheim, before going to Almere the first time.

Rodney Daal played in only 16 games in the Dutch big league, mostly as catcher, but he was also used as third baseman. In 2010, he signed a contract with the San Diego Padres, then made his professional debut in 2011 playing at the Rookie League-level. In that same year, he played in one Triple-A game. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, Daal played in Single-A and Rookie League for the Padres, before being released. Last year, he played in an Independent League.

The other three newcomers are pitchers Roderick Hennekes and Roland Laurens and infielder Bryce Cherry, who all played in lower divisions. Laurens played for RCH-Pinguïns, with whom he finished in third place in the second highest league ('Overgangsklasse'). Hennekes and Cherry both played for Robur '58, with they won the title in the A-pool of the Second Division. These three players never played in the big league before.

Two players decided to play for DSS in the new season, being infielder Omar Williams and outfielder Jordan Illis.

Williams was the leading hitter this season for UVV with a .325 batting average (40-for-123) with six doubles and three homeruns. Williams also led the team in basehits and homeruns. He scored 16 runs and also batted in 16, which was second-best in the team.

Illis played in 28 games and batted .161 (9-for-56) this season, scoring six runs and batting in three. He hit one double.

Two other players have left UVV to play for De Glaskoning Twins in 2017, righthanded pitcher Thijs Steenwijk and first baseman Jamie Verheyleweghen.

Steenwijk appeared in 18 games, including one as a starter. He was 0-1 with no saves and a 4.88 ERA. The righthander threw 28 2/3 inning in which he struckout 15 batters, but walked 28 and gave up 38 basehits.

Verheyleweghen missed several games due to an injury, but played in 31 this season. The Belgian batted .284 (27-for-95) with six doubles. He scored 12 runs and batted in 15, which was the third highest-total of the team.

Catcher Sven Jongejans will play for HCAW next year and outfielder Norbert Jongerius will wear the uniform of L&D Amsterdam Pirates.

After then 2015 season, Jongejans came to UVV from DSS. In his first season in Vleuten, he batted .215 (26-for-121) with three doubles. He scored 16 runs and also batted in 16 runs. Jongejans shared second place in the team with Williams with his 16 RBI's.

Jongerius this year also made his debut in the French National Team, with whom he participated in the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Panama and the European Championship in the Netherlands. The outfielder batted .216 (22-for-102) with three doubles, eight runs scored and nine runs batted in. He led the team with 13 stolen bases and seven sacrifice bunts.
