Twins erases deficit against UVV late, resulting in tie
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - De Glaskoning Twins trailed 9-3 halfway the seventh inning, but then added six runs against Pickles UVV on Thursday-evening (June 1). As the 10:30 PM curfew-rule has been reached, the game ended after eight complete innings with a 9-9 tie. The series continues on Saturday, also in Vleuten.

Trailing 9-4, Twins rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth, but left runners behind on second and third base. UVV collected 12 basehits, including four by Rick Kuipers and three by Julian Goins.

For UVV, it again was the other way around for the second time in three days. Last Tuesday, UVV played a home game at the site of DSS in Haarlem. Tonight, it played an away-game at its own site in Vleuten.

On Tuesday, UVV's home game had to be played at the site of DSS as part of its punishment for using an ineligible player in a game played on May 13. That game against DSS was won and declared invalid. Tonight, UVV played on its site, as opponent Twins plays all its weekly night-games at the site of their opponent, due to the insufficient light-installation on its home field in Oosterhout.

Complete schedule

UVV took an early lead tonight, as it scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Rick Kuipers led off with a bunt-single off of starter Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro and stole second base. Next batter Julian Rip walked and the two runners were awarded the next base when a balk was called. Moments later, Kuipers and Rip both scored on a double by Randy Daal. He then also got the next base when another balk was called. It was the second time this season, that Sarmiento committed two balks in one game. Daal was unable to advance on a following grounder by Sergino Martis. He then did advance on a grounder to third base by next batter Mike Bazuine. As that ended in an error at the plate, Daal scored to make it a 3-0 score.

Twins reacted with two runs in its first at bat off of starter Timo van Ancum. He walked lead-off hitter Jamie Verheyleweghen, who then scored on an one-out triple by Dennis De Quint. The two Belgian players both have played for UVV in recents years. De Quint scored the next run on a sacrifice fly by Melvin Perdue.

In the top of the second inning, UVV added another run. Julian Goins led off with a double and reached third base when an outfield-error followed. He then scored on an one-out double by Rick Kuipers.

In the third, UVV got another runner in scoring position. With two outs, Tijmen Takke walked, then the umpires called a balk for the third time on Sarmiento. With Takke on second base, Berend Ruben also walked, but the two runners were left behind.

Sarmiento now has six balks this season. Last year, the most balks by one pitcher was three, the most for a team was six. In 2012, Sarmiento also led the league in balks when he pitched for Sparta-Feyenoord. He then got credited with six balks, but he already has equaled that total halfway this season.

UVV also got into scoring position in the fourth, but was unable to take some more distance. With one out, Rick Kuipers reached on a bunt-single, his third basehit in the game. He stole second base with two outs, but then was left behind.

In the fifth, off of new pitcher Brendan Schoemaker, Mike Bazuin singled with one out, but was forced out.

After scoring in the first inning, Twins did reached the bases in following innings, but was unsuccessful. With two outs in the second inning, Menno Lenting walked, but was picked off by Timo van Ancum.

After being retired in order in the third, Twins left three runners behind in the fourth at bat. Dennis De Quint led off with a double and Melvin Perdue walked. Everyone was safe when an error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Peels. With that, Twins had the bases loaded with no outs! But hereafter, a foul-out, flyout and strikeout ended the inning.

In the top of the sixth, UVV scored another run. Julian Goins led off with a single, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Rick Kuipers. With this, the leftfielder became the eleventh player this season and third of UVV to collect four basehits in one game.

Twins got productive again in the bottom of fhe sixth inning. Dennis De Quint led off with a walk, but was eliminated at third base trying to take an extra base on a single down the leftfield-line by Melvin Perdue, who himself ended up on second base. The American then advanced on a bunt-single by Nick Peels and scored when Christopher Ge reached on an error with two outs.

UVV then appeared to decide the game with a 4-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. Sergino Martis led off with a single and Mike Bazuin walked. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Tijmen Takke, but UVV then got the bases loaded when next batter Berend Ruben was hit by a pitch. A run was scored when Julian Goins singled. With two outs and the bases still loaded, a baseclearing throwing error then followed on a bunt. Rick Kuipers bunted the ball, which was fielded by pitcher Brendan Schoemaker, but he threw the ball past first base where it ended up in foul-territory in rightfield. All three runners were able to score, while Kuipers ended up on third base. Schoemaker closed with a strikeout, but UVV now led 9-3.

Twins got one run back in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Roderick Hennekes, who took over from starter Timo van Ancum. Lead-off hitter Denzel Bryson reached on an error, moved to third base on a single by Tair Vrutaal and scored on a sacrifice fly by Melvin Perdue.

In the top of the eighth, UVV failed to take more distance and left three runners behind. Randy Daal led off with a single, Mike Bazuin singled with one out and Berend Ruben walked with two outs. The inning ended when Daal was forced out at the plate on a comeback-grounder from Julian Goins.

Halfway the eighth inning, the 9-4 lead appeared to be comfortable for UVV. It was known in advance that this would be the final inning in the game due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule. But in a long bottom of the eighth, Twins struck with five runs to come alongside! The team got the bases loaded quickly off of reliever Roderick Hennekes. Mick Molenaar and Christopher Ge walked, moved on a wild pitch, then Menno Lenting also walked. A pitching change followed and Roland Laurens took over, but he was greeted with a baseclearing, 3-run double from rookie Denzel Bryson, which narrowed the deficit to 9-7. Hereafter, a walk followed for Tair Vrutaal, who was replaced by pinch-runner (and pitcher) Ibrahim Redan. Another pitching change followed and this time José Moreno took the mound. Bryson and Redan advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Bram Grooten and with first base open, Dennis De Quint was walked intentionally to set up a force play, but he also represented the winning run. Another pitcher was the inserted as pinch-runner, as Matthew Latta took over from De Quint at first base. With the bases loaded, no run could be scored when Melvin Perdue flied out to centerfield. But with two outs, Nick Peels connected well and delivered a 2-run single that made it a 9-9 score. With runners on second and third base, the inning ended when Moreno closed with a strikeout. That also ended the game, as the 10:30 PM curfew-rule has well been surpassed. And with that, the game ended in a 9-9 tie.
