HAARLEM (Neth.) - League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded another big win against DSS on Saturday (June 3). After winning 12-1 on Friday-evening, Amsterdam now won 13-2 and also ended that game via the mercy-rule. On Thursday-evening, DSS surprised with a 3-1 victory in the opener of the series, deciding the game with two runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Amsterdam led only 3-1 after six innings, but then rallied for ten runs in the top of the seventh to increase its lead to a mercy-rule run-difference. Amsterdam collected 10 basehits, including three by Zerzinho Croes and homeruns by Rashid Gerard and Kenny Berkenbosch.

DSS scored its runs on homeruns by Devano Pieter and Sven van de Sanden.

On Monday, Amsterdam Pirates travels to Regensburg (Germany) for participation in the European Champions Cup-tournament. The event begins on Wednesday and Amsterdam then will open against T&A San Marino. Last year, Amsterdam captured the European Cup when the event was held in Italy and San Marino.

(June 3)

Complete schedule

Initially, Amsterdam Pirates led only 3-1 after six innings, but then rallied for ten runs in the top of the seventh to record another mercy-rule victory.

After leaving two runners behind in the top of the first inning, Amsterdam scored its first run in the second at bat off of starter Mike Groen. With two outs, Jesse Aussems walked and scored all the way from first base when a grounder from next batter Max Clarijs ended in an error. Clarijs reached third base on the error, but then was left behind.

Amsterdam doubled its lead in the third. Zerzinho Croes then led off with a single, moved on a passed ball and a single by Nick Urbanus and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Berkenbosch.

Another Amsterdam-run was scored in the fourth, this time by Norbert Jongerius. He led off with a walk, reached third base when a pick-off ended in an error, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Clarijs to make it a 3-0 score.

Lefthander Robin Schel made his third start of the season and struckout the side in the first at bat. He again had a fine outing today, didn't ran into problems and was supported with fine defense. In the second inning, he gave up a lead-off double to Omar Williams, but retired the next three batters, including two more strikeouts.

After retiring the side again in the third, Schel gave up a lead-off homerun in the fourth to rookie Devano Pieter, his first in the big league. A single by Koen Halderman gave DSS another baserunner, but hereafter, a double play followed and a grounder ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sven van de Sanden doubled with one out for DSS, but he would strand on third base. Amsterdam left a runner in the top of the sixth when the DSS-defense turned a double play. In the home half of the sixth, DSS left another runner behind on third base.

In the top of the seventh, Amsterdam decided the game with a 10-run rally on six basehits, including two 3-run homeruns. Donny Breek took over the DSS-pitching, but he gave up a lead-off single to Zerzinho Croes and hit next batter Rashid Gerard with a pitch. Hereafter, Kenny Berkenbosch connected well and hit a 3-run homerun. This was his first homerun since July 5, 2015 when he hit one against The Hawks. Danny Rombley followed with a single. With one out, Norbert Jongerius walked and Jesse Aussems added a 2-run double. That led to a pitching change, as Gijs Timmer took over. He got the bases loaded when he walked Max Clarijs and Remco Draijer. Zerzinho Croes then batted in two runs with a double in his second at bat in the inning and Rashid Gerard followed with a 3-run homerun to lift the lead to 13-1. Croes and Gerard both scored twice in this at bat, while Croes also had two basehits. After Gerard's homerun, Tim Halderman became the third pitcher in the inning. He saw Kenny Berkenbosch hit a line drive, but that was caught by short stop Mitchel Dautzenberg. A flyout then ended the long and productive Amsterdam-inning.

DSS scored one more run in its seventh at bat off of reliever Dennis Burgersdijk when Sven van de Sanden homered with two outs. But that would be the final run of the game.
