Amsterdam Pirates wins big vs. UVV; Cordemans wins 10th game

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) -
League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates won 15-5 in eight innings on a stormy Thursday-evening (August 3) against Pickles UVV, which now has lost eight in a row.
With a 9-2 lead for Amsterdam, UVV scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Moments later, the home team rallied for six runs to reach a 10-run difference and end the game via the mercy-rule.
Amsterdam Pirates collected 16 basehits, including three by Remco Draijer and Jesse Aussems.
Danny Rombley homered and Zerzinho Croes batted in four runs.
Draijer and Rombley both scored three runs.
Sergino Martis homered for UVV.
Amsterdam-starter Rob Cordemans struckout six batters in six innings.
With that, he is now 21 strikeouts away from tying the All-Time StrikeOut-record.
However, he will have to wait for next season to tie and break the record.
Tonight was his final start of the regular season.
Cordemans earned his tenth victory of the season and with that, he is the lone 10-game winner.
Last season, there two 10-game winners, being Orlando Yntema (Neptunus) and Lars Huijer (Hoofddorp Pioniers).
The last time Cordemans won ten games was in 2013.
By going 10-0 this season, Cordemans again is the front runner to be named Best Pitcher.
The righthander is currently in second place with an 1.58 ERA behind teammate Kevin Heijstek, who had an 1.41 ERA and will be the starter on Saturday.
The .180 opposing batting average off of Cordemans is the lowest in the league.
With 68 strikeouts, Cordemans is in second place, two behind leader Lars Huijer (Hoofddorp Pionier), who tonight also got his final start of the season.
The series continues on Saturday in Amsterdam, then closes on Sunday in Vleuten.

Amsterdam Pirates was off to a productive start, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Kevin van Veen.
The righthander walked lead-off hitter Remco Draijer, then saw an error being made on a grounder by Zerzinho Croes.
Both scored on a following double by Nick Urbanus.
With one out, the bases got loaded when Kenny Berkenbosch walked and Danny Rombley was hit by a pitch.
The next run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Patrick Bok.
After Rombley and Berkenbosch had moved on a wild pitch, Jesse Aussems delivered a 2-run single to make it a 5-0 score.
UVV got one run back in the second at bat off of Rob Cordemans.
The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Julian Rip, who went on to score on a 2-run single by Mike Bazuin.
Last Tuesday, Bazuin had left the game against Curaçao Neptunus after making a hard fall while being tagged out at first base.
But he was back in the starting line-up tonight.
Amsterdam left runners on second and third base in the bottom of the second, its defense turned a double play in the top of the third, then added another run in the bottom of the third.
With two outs, Jesse Aussems and Max Clarijs singled, followed by a runscoring single from Remco Draijer.
UVV scored another run in the fourth when Sergino Martis led off with his fourth homerun of the season.
Cordemans retired the next three batters, two of them with a strikeout.
After Cordemans had retired the side in the top of the fifth, the Amsterdam-offense added two more runs in the home half of the inning off of Jerremyh Angela.
He had taken over the previous inning and the had retired the side.
In the fifth, Angela struckout three batters, but also gave up three runs.
With Danny Rombley and Jesse Aussems (both singled) on base and two outs, Remco Draijer singled in a run and Zerzinho Croes followed with a 2-run single to make it a 9-2 score.
After two scoreless innings, UVV narrowed the deficit to 9-5, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth off of reliever Nick Veltkamp.
Rick Kuipers led off with a single, moved on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Tijmen Takke.
Veltkamp then hit Berend Ruben with a pitch and gave up an RBI-single to Sergino Martis.
With one out, a force play-grounder by Jelle Blaauw brought in the third run in the inning.
Moments later, Amsterdam reached the 10-run difference, scoring six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of reliever Jimmy Osinga.
Nick Urbanus led off with a walk, then Kenny Berkenbosch also walked with one out.
Danny Rombley followed with his fifth homerun of the season.
Patrick Bok then walked, moved on a grounder and scored when an error followed on an infield-hit by Max Clarijs.
A single by Remco Draijer led to runners on second and third base, then Zerzinho Croes connected for a walk-off, 2-run single to lift the lead to 15-5 and end the game.
