Nederlands

CLEVELAND, Ohio (USA) - Defending American League-champion Cleveland Indians opened the best-of-five American League Division Series on Thursday-evening (October 5) with a 4-0 shutout-win against Wild Card-winner New York Yankees. The Series continues on Friday.

Cleveland-starter Trevor Bauer held the Yankees hitless for 5 1/3 inning tonight. In the end, New York recorded only three basehits.

Cleveland Indians was 102-60 this season and won the title in the American League Central Division. Last year, Cleveland also won the West-title and went on to reach the World Series, which it then lost to the Chicago Cubs. The last time that Cleveland has won a World Series was in 1948, which is 68 years ago and is now the longest drought in the Major League. Last year, the Cubs ended their 107-year drought.

New York Yankees was 91-71 this season to reach the Wild Card Game. On Tuesday, New York won 8-4 against Minnesota Twins to advance to the ALDS. For the Yankees, this is the 19th time that the team plays in the Division Series.

Starting pitchers were Trevor Bauer (Cleveland) and Sonny Gray (New York).

The 26-year old righthander Bauer was 17-9 this season with a 4.19 ERA and 196 strikeouts in 176 1/3 inning. After making his big league-debut in 2012 with Arizona Diamondbacks, Bauer plays for the Indians since 2013.

The 27-year old righthander Gray was 10-12 this year with a 3.55 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 162 1/3 inning. Gray made his Major League-debut in 2013 with Oakland Athletics with whom he also started this season. Gray came to the Yankees in a trade on July 31.

At Progressive Field, Cleveland opened the score in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Sonny Gray. Jay Bruce led off with a double and moved when Carlos Santana singled. The bases got loaded when Gray hit Lonnie Chisenhall with a pitch. Bruce then scored when Roberto Perez grounded into a double play, which was a tough grounder, but handled very well by short stop Didi Gregorius.

Two runs were added in the fourth inning. Edwin Encarnacion led off with a walk and Jay Bruce followed with a homerun to make it a 3-0 score.

In the fifth, Cleveland scored its fourth run and again Jay Bruce was involved. José Ramirez led off with a single and moved on a wild pitch. After a pitching change, Ramirez advanced to third base on another wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Jay Bruce.

The Yankees were unable to produce off of starter Trevor Bauer. He walked Greg Bird with two outs in the second, but then closed with a strikeout. In the top of the fourth, Aaron Judge led off and struckout, but reached on a wild pitch. However, a double play followed.

After retiring the side in the fifth inning, Bauer was still pitching a No-Hitter, but that ended with one out in the sixth. Aaron Hicks then doubled and moved on a grounder. But Bauer then closed the inning by striking out Aaron Judge for the third time.

In the seventh inning, Bauer gave up a 2-out single to Starlin Castro and was then relieved by Andrew Miller, who closed with a strikeout.

In the top of the eighth, Andrew Miller struckout two batters, but also walked two. He was then relieved by Cody Allen, who added another strikeout. That lifted the strikeout-total for the Cleveland-pitchers to 12.

In the top of the ninth inning, New York recorded its third basehit of the evening when Starlin Castro singled with two outs. That came after Didi Gregorius was called out on a check-swing by 3B Umpire Brian O'Nora. The swing of Gregorius was close, but not close enough to call. With Castro on first base, Cody Allen closed the game with another strikeout. That gave the three Cleveland-pitchers 14 strikeouts, including eight by Trevor Bauer.
