Amsterdam Pirates closes season with another fine pitching performance
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates closed its regular season on Sunday (August 6) with a 7-4 victory at Pickles UVV. With that, Amsterdam completed a sweep after winning 15-5 in the opener on Thursday and 4-3 on Saturday.

The team got another fine pitching performance from one of its starters, as lefthander Robin Schel struckout six and gave up only three hits in the five innings he threw. With that, Schel won his seventh game of the season, which is the second-best total amongst lefthanders behind Diegomar Markwell (Curaçao Neptunus), who closed the season with nine wins.

With Rob Cordemans (10-0), Kevin Heijstek (8-0) and Robin Schel (7-1), Amsterdam Pirates is the lone team this season to have three 7-game winners in its pitching-staff. The last two seasons, Neptunus accomplished this feat. In both seasons, it were the same three pitchers, who did it: Orlando Yntema, Diegomar Markwell and Kenny Van Den Branden.

After Thursday's games, the top-10 of best hitters was formed by players from Neptunus and Amsterdam Pirates only. Today, after completion of the regular season, there are eight players from these two teams that finished in the top-10. Both teams have six players each in the top-15 of best hitters. In the weekend, two players from Hoofddorp Pioniers moved into the top-10, being Jeffrey Arends (7th place) and rookie Joey Eeman (9th place). Benjamin Dille (Neptunus) won the batting title with a .448 average, followed by Amsterdam-hitters Danny Rombley and Gilmer Lampe, who closed with an average of respectively .390 and .374. Remco Draijer finished fifth with a .362 batting average.

In today's game in Vleuten, UVV's lead-off hitter Rick Kuipers stole his 14th base of the season to finish in first place in this category. Last season, the award for most stolen bases also went to a player of UVV, when Gilmer Lampe (who now plays for Amsterdam) was the leader.

In the regular season, Amsterdam Pirates was the lone team to give up fewer than 100 opposing runs. The 93 runs Amsterdam allowed are the fewest given up since the 2012 season. Back then, it also was Pirates that led in this category and then also gave up 93 runs (in 42 games).

Complete schedule

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score in the top of the second inning off of starter Timo van Ancum. Danny Rombley led off with a walk and he scored when Linoy Croes followed with a homerun. It had been a very emotional week for Croes, as some of his Aruban relatives were involved in a severe accident in the Dominican Republic last weekend. After a family-reunion, they were on their way to the airport to return to Aruba when the driver of their van lost control. Sadly enough, an aunt passed away and others had to be hospitalized.

In today's game, Croes was 3-for-5 and only missed the triple to hit for-the-cycle. Because of an injury, he missed the last few games.

UVV left a runner behind on third base in its opening at bat off of starter Robin Schel. Rick Kuipers led off with an infield-hit, then stole second base. With that, he stole his 14th base of the season, which would give him the lead in this category. Kuipers advanced on a flyout, but then stranded on third base.

Schel retired the side in the second and third inning, striking five batters!

UVV then cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Berend Ruben singled, stole scond base with two outs and scored on a double by Julian Rip.

Amsterdam took more distance in the top of the fifth inning after also getting into scoring position in the previous two at bats. In the third, Nick Urbanus walked with two outs and stole second base, but was left behind. In the fourth, Linoy Croes singled with one out, then Rashid Gerard was hit by a pitch with two outs. Jesse Aussems then singled, but that also led to the elimination of Croes at the plate.

In the fifth, Remco Draijer led off for Pirates with a homerun, his second in two days. Zerzinho Croes then reached on an error and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Urbanus. Hereafter, Gilmer Lampe walked, then Danny Rombley followed with a 2-run double to lift the lead to 5-1, which led to a pitching change.

The league-leader added two more runs in the sixth off of reliever Gilian van Lith. The lefthander hit lead-off hitter Jesse Aussems with a pitch, then gave up a single to Remco Draijer and an RBI-double to Zerzinho Croes. The bases got loaded when he walked Nick Urbanus, who walked four times in this game. Another pitching change followed, as Van Lith was relieved by Kevin van Veen, who was the starter in last Thursday's opener. Van Veen got a force play-grounder from Gilmer Lampe, but that also brought in a run and made it a 7-1 score.

UVV got one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Dennis Burgersdijk, who took over from Robin Schel. Rick Kuipers led off with a double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tijmen Takke. Hereafter, Burgersdijk struckout two of the next three batters. The righthander added two more strikeouts in the seventh inning when he retired the side.

After Nick Veltkamp retired the UVV-side in the eighth, Amsterdam got into scoring position again in the ninth off reliever Jonah Van Bemmelen. Linoy Croes led off with a double, moved on a grounder, but stranded on third base.

With a 7-2 lead, Daan Hendrix pitched the ninth inning for Amsterdam, but he again ran into problems, just as on Saturday. The righthander began with a strikeout, but then gave up an infield-hit to Sergino Martis and a homerun to Julian Rip. Next batter Julian Goins doubled and moved to third base on a 2-out wild pitch. But that was to be it, as a grounder ended the inning and the game.
