Hoofddorp Pioniers closes season with double-header victory
Nederlands
HOOFDDORP (Neth.) -
Hoofddorp Pioniers closed its regular season on Sunday (August 6) by winning both games of a double-header against De Glaskoning Twins.
Pioniers won the opener with a 7-2 score, then added a 5-0 shutout in the second game.
In the opening game on Thursday-evening, Pioniers won 10-2.
The second game of the 3-game series was cancelled on Saturday after the field had become unplayable due to rain in the morning and early afternoon.
Instead of re-scheduling the game for the following Tuesday-evening, which is the general ruling, it was decided to re-schedule the game for today as the opening game of a double-header in Hoofddorp.
In the opener, Pioniers collected 13 basehits, including three by Shurman Marlin, while Mark Smit scored three runs.
Dennis De Quint registered three basehits for Twins.
In the second game, rookie Darryl Jamoena threw his first complete game and also his first big league shutout.
The righthander gave up five basehits in only his second start of the season.
Two players of Pioniers batted themselves into the top-10 today of the big league.
Veteran Jeffrey Arends hit four basehits in the double-header, while rookie Joey Eeman collected three basehits.
With that, Arends finished seventh with a .357 average, while Eeman is ninth with .347.
With today's two victories, Pioniers moved into a tie for third place with HCAW.
However, HCAW got third place, as the head-to-head results are in favor of the Bussum-squad, which won three of the six games, while one ended in a tie.
With that, Pioniers officially finished in fourth place.
After losing the first game, Twins ended up in seventh place in the final standings.
In previous years, there have been four double-headers, however, that were not two complete games.
All four times, first the remainder of an earlier game was completed.
The last time that two complete games were played on one day was almost exactly six years ago.
On Sunday, August 7, 2011, Neptunus and ADO played a double-header in Rotterdam.
Neptunus won the opener 10-1, then won the next game 7-6 in ten innings.
The first game had rained out four days earlier.
In this double-header, Pioniers' first baseman Jeffrey Arends played at first base for Neptunus.

Game One
The opener started 30 minutes later than the time that was announced on Saturday, but when it got underway, Pioniers scored twice in the top of the first inning.
Starting pitcher Brendan Schoemaker gave up a lead-off single to Joey Eeman, then hit next batter Mark Smit with a pitch and gave up a runscoring single to Dudley Leonora.
The second run was scored when Jeffrey Arends grounded into a double play.
Twins got one run back in its first at bat off of starter Chris Pfau.
With one out, Dennis De Quint singled and scored when Mick Molenaar reached on an error.
After Pioniers left a runner behind on second base in the second inning, Twins got a chance to come alongside.
Menno Lenting led off the bottom of then second with a single, but was picked off on first base.
Bram Grooten then singled and Bart Janssen walked.
The two advanced on a grounder, but then were left behind.
In the top of the third inning, Pioniers added a run when Mark Smit led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dudley Leonora.
Pioniers was unable to take some more distance, but in the meantime, Twins failed to turn the game its way.
In the third inning, the team left runners on second and third base and in the fourth at bat, three runners were left behind.
But Twins also managed to score one run in the fourth.
With one out, the team got the bases loaded when Bart Janssen and Jemuel Angela walked and Bob van der Meer singled.
Dennis De Quint followed with a runscoring single.
That brought in Janssen, but Angela was eliminated at the plate when he also tried to score.
Pioniers then started to take more distance from the sixth inning on off of new pitcher Daisuke Yamashita.
The Japanese righthander gave up a lead-off double to Shurman Marlin, his second in the game.
With one out, Marlin moved on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Duco Nuijten that followed a walk for Angelo Wicklert.
With two outs, Wicklert scored the next run on a single by Joey Eeman.
After Twins again had left three runners behind in the bottom of the sixth, Pioniers added two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Lead-off hitter Mark Smit was hit by a pitch, then the bases got loaded when Dudley Leonora and Jeffrey Arends both walked.
Shurman Marlin followed with a 2-run single to make it a 7-2 score.
With that lead, Scott Ronnenbergh took over the pitching for Pioniers in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The lefthander walked the first two batters he faced, but retired the next three batters.
He also got two baserunners with one out in the eighth inning, but then also avoided giving up runs.
Ronnenbergh retired the side in the ninth, closing with a strikeout to earn his first save of the season.
Twins left 16 runners behind, which is the second highest total this season.
UVV left 17 runners behind on June 4 against Twins.
Pioniers had a surprise leftfielder in this game, as Lars Huijer, who is a starting pitcher, played the position.
In his fourth at bat in the game, Huijer led off the eighth inning with a single, but then was eliminated in a double play.
Pioniers is known for putting players in unfamiliar positions in its last regular season-game.
In its final game last season against Pickles UVV, Huijer was inserted as pinch-hitter and later played in rightfield.
He then homered as a pinch-hitter and went 3-for-3 in the game.

Game Two
It took three hours and eight minutes to complete the first game, which ended at 4:38 PM.
This second game went underway at 4:15 PM and so, it could have become a very long day when this game also lasted three hours.
But that didn't happen, as this one took only two hours and 12 minutes.
The game remained scoreless in the first four innings, but both teams got some baserunners.
In the top of the first inning, Bob van der Meer led off with a walk for Twins, but was forced out on a grounder by Bram Grooten, who later was caught stealing.
For Pioniers, Joey Eeman led off with a walk and stole second, but then was eliminated at third base trying to advance on a grounder by Dudley Leonora, who then also was caught stealing.
In the second inning, both teams left a runner behind, then both were retired in order in the third at bat.
In both the fourth and fifth inning, the Pioniers-defense made a double play.
Pioniers then opened the score with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Twins-starter Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro walked lead-off hitter Glenn Bakker and gave up a single to Duco Nuijten.
After the two had executed a double-steal, the bases got loaded when Angelo Wicklert walked.
That led to a pitching change.
Raf Cocu took over and got a double play-grounder from Lars Huijer, who again played in leftfield.
But the grounder also brought in the first run.
Joey Eeman followed with a runscoring single and Mark Smit added an RBI-double to make it a 3-0 score.
Pioniers added two unearned runs in the seventh inning off of reliever Jan Evertse, who had taken over in the previous at bat.
Angelo Wicklert led off with a double, which was his first big league-basehit.
When an outfield-error followed, he was able to reach third base.
Moments later, he scored on a single by Lars Huijer.
After reaching first base, Huijer was replaced as pinch-runner by Scott Ronnenbergh.
The reliever then stole second base (!), advanced when a throwing error followed and scored after a passed ball on a strikeout.
Darryl Jamoena made his second start of the season for Pioniers.
The righthander, who was mostly used as a reliever, threw his first complete game, needing 97 pitches.
He struckout only one batter, but also gave up only five basehits and threw his first shutout.
Jamoena allowed only one runner to get into scoring position, which happened in the eighth inning.
With two outs, he walked Bart Janssen, then gave up a single to Bob van der Meer.
With that, Janssen became the lone player of Twins to reach second base.
