Dodgers outscore Diamondsbacks in National League Division Series-opener
Nederlands

LOS ANGELES, California (USA) - Los Angeles Dodgers opened the best-of-five National League Division Series against Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday-evening (October 6) with a 9-5 victory. The Series continues on Saturday.

Los Angeles took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning and led 7-1 after five innings. Arizona then did some scoring of its own narrowed the deficit to 7-4 after seven innings, but the Dodgers then took more distance.

The Dodgers collected 12 basehits. The team was led by Justin Turner, who was 3-for-4, including a homerun, and batted in five runs.

Los Angeles was 104-58 this season to win the title in the National League West Division for the fifth straight year. With that, the Dodgers became the first team to win five consecutive titles in NL West-history. It was the first time since 1974 that the Dodgers won 100 games in one season. The 104 wins were the most in the Majors since the St. Louis Cardinals won 105 in 2004.

Arizona was 93-69 this season to qualify for the Wild Card Game. Last Wednesday, the Diamondbacks reached the Division Series by winning the Wild Card Game against Colorado Rockies, 11-8.

Starting pitchers were Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles) and Taijuan Walker (Arizona).

29-year old lefthander Clayton Kershaw was 18-4 this season with a 2.31 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 175 innings. Kershaw missed the entire month of August due to a back-injury. It was the eighth consecutive season in which Kershaw won at least 12 games. He pitches for the Dodgers since 2008. In June, he reached the 2000 career strikeouts.

25-year old righthander Taijuan Walker (his first name is pronounced tie-wahn) was 9-9 this season with a 3.49 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 157 1/3 inning. Walker made his big league-debut in 2013 pitching for Seattle Mariners for whom he pitched through last year. Walker came to Arizona in a trade in November last year.

Before the game started, the national anthem was sung by 16-year old actress and singer Isabela Moner. She is known from the Nickelodeon TV-series '100 Things To Do Before High School' (2014-2016), but also from her role as Izabella in the movie Transformers: The Last Knight (2017).

The ceremonial first pitch in Dodger Stadium was thrown by 91-year old legendary Dodger-great Don Newcombe, who played for the Dodgers in 1949-1951 and then again in 1954-1958. Newcombe, who still is a special advisor in the Dodger-organization, was the first-ever winner of the Cy Young Award in 1956 when he also was named Most Valuable Player of the National League. Curaçao-born Dodger-closer Kenley Jansen caught the ball thrown by Newcombe.

The Dodgers struck early off of starter Taijuan Walker. He gave up a lead-off single to Chris Taylor, then walked Corey Seager. Hereafter, Justin Turner drove a line drive into left-centerfield for a 3-run homerun. The hitting continued, as Cody Bellinger then singled and scored on a following double by Yasiel Puig. Now trailing 4-0 and with still no outs, Walker struckout veteran Curtis Granderson, who came to the Dodgers in August after a trade with the New York Mets. Walker then also struckout Yasmani Grandal. With pitcher Clayton Kershaw on deck and first base open, next hitter Logan Forsythe was walked intentionally. Walker closed the long at bat by striking out Kershaw.

Arizona got one run back in the third inning when A.J. Pollock homered with two outs, but the Dodgers then took more distance.

In the bottom of the fourth, the home team rallied for three more runs to lift the lead to 7-1. Logan Forsythe led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Clayton Kershaw. After next hitter Chris Taylor had walked, Corey Seager and Justin Turner followed with runscoring singles. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Cody Bellinger reached on an error, then the next run was scored on a grounder by Yasiel Puig.

Arizona then came back into the game somewhat. In the sixth, J.D. Martínez hit a solo-homerun for Arizona. Two more runs were added in the seventh when Ketel Marte and Jeff Mathis hit back-to-back homeruns off of Kershaw. The Dodger-starter was relieved hereafter by Tony Watson.

Leading 7-4, the Dodgers scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. New pitcher Andrew Chafin gave up a lead-off single to Austin Barnes and was replaced by Jimmie Sherfy. He got a grounder from Chris Taylor that moved Barnes to second base. Sherfy then gave up an RBI-triple to Corey Seager, who scored himself on a following single by Justin Turner to make it a 9-4 score.

Arizona managed to add only one more run in the ninth on an error that followed a force play-grounder by Jake Lamb off of closer Kenley Jansen.
