Dodgers also win second game against Diamondsbacks

LOS ANGELES, California (USA) - Los Angeles Dodgers won 8-5 on Saturday-evening (October 7) against Arizona Diamondbacks to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five National League Division Series. Los Angeles opened the Series on Friday with a 9-5 victory. The Series now moves to Phoenix, where Game 3 will be played coming Monday.

The Dodgers trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but led 7-2 after five at bats. The team collected 12 basehits, while Arizona had seven hits, including two homeruns that accounted for their five runs. Kenley Jansen threw 1 2/3 inning to earn a save.

Starting pitchers were Rich Hill (Los Angeles) and Robbie Ray (Arizona).

37-year old lefthander Rich Hill was 12-8 this season with a 3.32 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 135 2/3 inning. The veteran made his Major League-debut in 2005 when he played for Chicago Cubs, where played through 2008. Hereafter, Hill played for Baltimore Orioles (2009), Boston Red Sox (2010-2012), Cleveland Indians (2013), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2014), New York Yankees (2014), again Boston (2015) and Oakland Athletics (2016). He then came to the Dodgers in a trade in August 2016.

26-year old lefthander Robbie Ray was 15-5 this season with a 2.89 ERA and 218 strikeouts in 162 innings pitched. Ray made his big league-debut in 2014 with Detroit Tigers. In December 2014, he was part of a 3-team trade. Ray and second baseman Domingo Leyba then went from Detroit to Arizona, while righthanded pitcher Shane Greene went from the New York Yankees to Detroit. Leaving Arizona to play for the Yankees was short stop Didi Gregorius.

Before the game started, the national anthem was sung by Elliott Yamin, who finished third in the fifth season of 'American Idol' in 2006.

The ceremonial first pitch in Dodger Stadium was thrown by 85-year old Dodger-great Maury Wills, who played for the Dodgers in 1959-1966, then again in 1969-1972 to concude his career. Wills was the National League Most Valuable Player in 1962 and still owns two Dodger-records. In 1962, he stole the most bases in a season (104) and he is the career-leader with the Dodgers in stolen bases (490). With his 104 stolen bases in 1962, Wills broke the record of legendary Ty Cobb, who had stolen 96 in 1915. He won three World Series with the Dodgers.

Arizona got on the scoreboard early, scoring twice in the top of the first inning off of starter Rich Hill. With one out, the lefthander walked A.J. Pollock, then gave up a homerun to Paul Goldschmidt.

After leaving a runner behind on first base in the first inning, the Dodgers scored their first run in the second at bat off of Robbie Ray, who struggled with his control. The lefthander walked lead-off hitter Kiké Hernández, then also walked Austin Barnes with one out. The two runners advanced on a wild pitch, the Hernández scored on a grounder by Yasiel Puig. That play ended in a close call at first base, but there, 1B Umpire (and crew chief) Gerry Davis made a great call after an earlier correct close call in the top of the at bat. Hereafter, Ray ended the inning by striking out Rich Hill.

The Dodgers struck in the bottom of the fourth inning and took a 3-2 lead. With one out, the bases got loaded when Logan Forsythe, Austin Barnes and Yasiel Puig all singled. Forsythe then scored the tying run on the third wild pitch tonight by Ray. The lefthander then struckout pinch-hitter Kyle Farmer (who hit for pitcher Rich Hill), but hereafter, Chris Taylor delivered a runscoring infield-hit that made it a 3-2 score.

Los Angeles enlarged its lead in the fifth at bat with a 4-run rally after the D-backs were retired in order in the top half by two relievers. Robbie Ray hit lead-off hitter Justin Turner with a pitch. Turner was forced out on a grounder by Cody Bellinger, but that also led to a pitching change. Ray was relieved by Jimmie Sherfy, who was greeted with a pinch-hit single from Curtis Granderson that led to runners on second and third base. Logan Forsythe followed with a runscoring single and Austin Barnes added a 2-run double that made it a 6-2 score and brought in another pitcher. Jorge De La Rosa took over and saw Barnes steal third base, then gave up an RBI-single to Yasiel Puig, who had another great offensive evening for the Dodgers.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Arizona got back into the game in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs. Jake Lamb and Ketel Marte led off with singles off of reliever Tony Watson. Brandon Morrow took over the pitching and faced pinch-hitter Brandon Drury, who then went after the first pitch he saw and hit a 3-run homerun to make it a 7-5 score. The next three batters were then retired in order.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Dodgers immediately got productive again themselves. New pitcher Archie Bradley gave up a lead-off single to Logan Forsythe (3-for-5, 3 runs), then got the bases loaded with one out when Yasiel Puig (3-for-4) reached on an infield-hit and Andre Ethier walked. A run was then scored when Chris Taylor reached on an error, as the ball went through the legs of short stop Ketel Marte for what might have been a double play-grounder. Bradley followed with a strikeout for Corey Seager, then Justin Turner popped out, but the Dodgers now led 8-5.

In the top of the eighth inning, Arizona reached base again off of reliever Josh Fields. He began with a strikeout, but then gave up a double to Daniel Descalso. Dodger-Manager Dave Roberts then decided to bring in closer Kenley Jansen for a 5-out save. Jansen struckout Chris Iannetta, then third baseman Justin Turner made a nice play on a grounder by Jake Lamb to end the inning.

Jansen retired the side (one strikeout) in the top of the ninth inning to close the game!
