HCAW wins twice on Day 1 Urbanus Tournament
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - On the first day of the 35th edition of the In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament, host HCAW registered two victories on Saturday (April 8).

This was somewhat of a surprise, as it faced two teams who were in the Play-Offs last year. HCAW turned a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 win against L&D Amsterdam Pirates, then also came from behind against Hoofddorp Pioniers. After trailing 1-0, HCAW won that game with a 3-1 score.

In between, Amsterdam Pirates won 10-4 against Pioniers.

Rachid Engelhardt played in his first game for HCAW today, while Kalian Sams played his first game of the exhibition season for Amsterdam Pirates. Sams returned home one-and-a-half week ago with the Netherlands Kingdom Team when it was eliminated at the World Baseball Classic.

HCAW vs. Amsterdam Pirates
HCAW trailed 4-1 halfway the third inning, but then rallied for four runs when the Amsterdam-defense committed three errors.

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score quickly in the first at bat off of starter Jim Ploeger. With one out, the lefthander gave up singles to Zerzinho Croes and Kalian Sams. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Remco Draijer, but hereafter, Danny Rombley doubled down the rightfield-line to bring in two runners.

Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek retired the side in the HCAW-first, then gave up a two-out homerun to Kevin Weijgertse in the next inning.

However, Pirates took more distance in the top of the third by adding two runs. Linoy Croes led off with a bunt-single and Zerzinho Croes followed with his second single in the game, which led to runners on second and third base. Kalian Sams then lined out, but with two outs (again), two runs were scored. First, the bases got loaded when Danny Rombley walked, then Patrick Bok connected for a 2-run single to lift the lead to 4-1. With runners on second and third base, Ploeger closed the at bat with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the third inning, it was HCAW's turn to be productive off of Heijstek. HCAW rallied for four runs with three of them being scored with two outs. While the Amsterdam-defense committed three errors, only one run was unearned. With one out, Sven Jongejans singled and scored when Roelie Henrique's double was followed by an outfield-error. A sacrifice fly by Boyd Tuhumury narrowed the deficit to 4-3. Hereafter, Vince Rooi walked and Rossini Frolijk singled. Kevin Dirksen added a runscoring single (tying the score at 4-4), which was followed by another outfield-error and led to runners at the corners. Moments later, Rooi scored the go-ahead run when a pick-off at first base by the catcher ended in third error in this at bat. Kevin Heijstek closed with a strikeout, but the game had turned the way of HCAW. Heijstek retired the side in his next two innings.

In the top of the fourth, Pirates appeared to come back immediately. Max Clarijs led off with a walk and Norbert Jongerius singled, but hereafter, a double play and grounder followed.

In the fifth, Moreno Vork took over the HCAW-pitching. He struckout three batters, but also gave up a 2-out single to Danny Rombley, who stranded at first base.

In the sixth, Sedley Karel closed the game for HCAW and retired the side.

Amsterdam Pirates vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
In the second game on Saturday, veteran righthander Rob Cordemans gave up a lead-off single to Dudley Leonora, who arrived earlier in the week in Hoofddorp and played in his first game for his new team. Last season Leonora played for Kinheim. With Leonora on first base, Cordemans retired the next three batters.

In the bottom of the first inning, Amsterdam opened the score with two runs off of starter Lars Huijer. Remco Draijer and Zerzinho Croes led off with singles. With one out, an error followed on a force play-grounder by Gilmer Lampe, which loaded the bases. Two runs were then scored when Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a single.

After Cordemans had retired the side in the second inning, Pirates got the bases loaded in its second at bat when the defense of Pioniers committed two errors. However, no runs were added and the bases were left loaded.

Pioniers got one run back in the top of the third inning. With one out, Joey Eeman walked, stole second base and scored on a single by Dudley Leonora. Sander Paap also singled, but the Pirates-defense the turned a double play to end the inning.

Hidde Brocken took over the Amsterdam-pitching in the fourth, retired the side and saw his teammates add a run moments later. Max Clarijs led off with a double, moved on a grounder and scored on a 2-out single by Gilmer Lampe to make it a 3-1 score.

In the fifth, Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 3-2. Lead-off hitter Glenn Bakker reached on an error and moved on a single by Duco Nuijten. Another error followed on a grounder by Joey Eeman, which led to a run. With one out, Sander Paap hit a line drive to second baseman Zerzinho Croes, who made an unassisted double play.

In the top of the sixth, Pioniers scored twice to take a 4-3 lead. Mervin Gario led off with a single and Jeffrey Arends walked, then Shurman Marlin followed with a 2-run double. With one out, Glenn Bakker also singled, but hereafter, Amsterdam turned its third double play in the game to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Amsterdam turned the game its way again with a 7-run rally off of new pitcher Scott Ronnenbergh. The lefthander got the bases loaded when he walked Max Clarijs and gave up singles to Remco Draijer (bunt) and Zerzinho Croes. Nick Urbanus then grounded out, but that also brought in the tying run. The bases were re-loaded when Ronnenbergh hit Gilmer Lampe with a pitch. A following single by Kenny Berkenbosch gave Amsterdam a 4-3 lead, then five more runs were added with two outs. A force play-grounder by Danny Rombley brought in the first of these five runs. The bases were then loaded again when Jesse Aussems walked and a following walk for Rashid Gerard led to the next run. In his second at bat in the inning, Max Clarijs delivered a 2-run double and another run was added on a wild pitch. That finally led to a pitching change. Third baseman Mervin Gario took over and ended the long inning when he fielded a comeback-grounder.

While Amsterdam had taken a 5-4 lead, the inning had to be completed according to tournament-rules. This is needed in case a run-difference tiebreaker is needed to determine the ranking.

Hoofddorp Pioniers vs. HCAW
In the first inning, both teams reached base, but both runners were eliminated. For HCAW, Boyd Tuhumury walked with one out, but he was picked off by starter Chris Pfau at first base to end the inning. For Pioniers, Mervin Gario singled with two outs, but was caught stealing.

After Pfau had retired the side in the top of the second inning, Pioniers took an 1-0 lead in its second at bat. Jeffrey Arends led off with a walk, advanced when a pick-off ended in an error, moved to third on a grounder and scored on a grounder by Brennan Nijhof.

In the top of the third inning, HCAW came alongside. Lead-off hitter Delano Selassa was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch and a single by Dylan Koster, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Koen Werkman.

In the fourth, HCAW got into scoring position again, but was unable to score. Vince Rooi reached on an error, then Rachid Engelhardt singled in his first game of the season for HCAW. But with two runners on base, the next three batters were retired in order.

HCAW then did add two runs in the fifth to take the lead. Lead-off hitter Dylan Koster reached on an error and Koen Werkman followed with a bunt-single. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique. Hereafter, Koster was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a comeback-grounder by Boyd Tuhumury, but Vince Rooi followed with a 2-run double to make it a 3-1 score in favor of HCAW.

In the bottom of the fifth, Brennan Nijhof led off for Pioniers with a single. HCAW-starter Kaj Timmermans followed with a strikeout, then a double play ended the inning.

Oscar Meuris closed the game for HCAW in the sixth. He gave up 2-out single to Sander Paap, but would be left behind on second base.
