Nederlands

THE BRONX, NEW YORK CITY, New York (USA) - New York Yankees rallied for four runs in the second inning on Monday (October 9) and went on to win 7-3 against Cleveland Indians in Game 4 of the best-of-five American League Division Series to even it at 2-2 and force a deciding fifth game.

Cleveland opened the Series on Thursday with a 4-0 shutout-win, then won the second game on Friday with a 9-8 in 13 innings after trailing 8-3 halfway the sixth inning. On Sunday, the Yankees avoided a sweep by winning only 1-0. The Series now moves back to Cleveland, where the fifth game will be played on Wednesday.

New York led 5-0 after three innings, then Cleveland narrowed the deficit to 5-3. However, the Yankees then took some more distance by scoring in the fifth and sixth inning to increase the lead to 7-3.

In today's game, Gary Sánchez homered for the Yankees, while Didi Gregorius walked three times. Aaron Judge, who had been hitless in the first three games, contributed with a 2-run double in the second inning to record his first basehit in the Series. However, Judge, who set a rookie-record this year with 52 homeruns, again struckout four times! It was the second time in this Series that he struckout four times. Judge is now 1-for-15 with 12 strikeouts! Judge became the fifth player in history with two four-strikeout games. The last was Marquis Grissom in 1997.

Starting pitchers were Luis Severino (New York) and Trevor Bauer (Cleveland).

23-year old righthander Luis Severino was 14-6 this season with a 2.98 ERA and 230 strikeouts in 193 1/3 inning. The Dominican was the starting pitcher for New York in the Wild Card Game against Minnesota Twins, but then threw only 1/3 inning, giving up four hits (2 homeruns) and three runs. Severino pitches for the Yankees since 2015, the year in which he made his Major League-debut.

26-year old righthander Trevor Bauer, who was 17-9 this season, made his second start of the Series. He was the starter and winner in the opener, striking out eight hitters in 6 2/3 inning in which he allowed only two basehits.

(October 9)

Before the game in Yankee Stadium, the national anthem was sung by Iranian-Canadian actor, singer and musical-star Ramin Karimloo, who has performed in several big productions in London's West End. There, he played lead roles in some long running musicals, including playing Raoul (2003-2004) and The Phantom (2007-2009) in The Phantom of the Opera three different parts in Les Misérables. In this musical, he played the lead role of Jean Valjean (2011-2015), but also Enjolras (2004-2005) and Marius (2002). He also played Jean Valjean in the Canadian production (2013) and the Broadway production in the USA (2014) for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. Karimloo also played the lead role of Chris in Miss Saigon (2005). He currently performs on Broadway in the new musical Anastasia.

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by former Yankee-closer Mariano Rivera, who pitched his entire big league-career for New York (1995-2013). Rivera played in 13 All Star Games, won five World Series and was the World Series MVP in 1999. He holds the Major League-record for career saves with 652.

The Yankees struck with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, which were all unearned. With one out, Starlin Castro reached on an error, then a strikeout followed. With two outs, Castro moved on a passed ball, then scored on a double by Todd Frazier. Aaron Hicks added a runscoring single to make it a 2-0 score and next hitter Brett Gardner also singled to put runners at the corners. Moments later, Gardner stole second base and both runners scored when Aaron Judge delivered a double for his first basehit in the Series. With first base open, Didi Gregorius was walked intentionally, but that also led to a pitching change. Joe Smith took over from Trevor Bauer, who today threw only 1 2/3 inning after having thrown a strong opening game. The Indians used eight pitchers today!

The Yankees added another unearned run in the fifth. Greg Bird led off with a walk and Starlin Castro doubled. With one out, the bases got loaded when Todd Frazier walked. Hereafter, Bird was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Aaron Hicks, which kept the bases loaded. Castro then scored when Brett Gardner reached on an error. That led to another pitching change and the inning ended when Aarin Judge struckout (again).

Cleveland got two runs back with two outs in the top of the fourth. Jay Bruce then walked and scored when next batter Carlos Santana homered.

Cleveland narrowed the deficit to only 5-3 in the fifth when Roberto Pérez homered with one out, but that was to be it for the Indians. Yankee-starter Luis Severino had a strong outing, striking out nine hitters in seven innings in which he allowed only four basehits.

New York got one run back in its fifth at bat and again, the run was unearned. Lead-off hitter Todd Frazier reached second base on a throwing error, moved on a grounder to third base, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Gardner.

In the sixth, New York made it a 7-3 score by scoring its lone earned run in the game when, with one out, Gary Sánchez homered.
