Jurjen van Zijl threw his second consecutive complete game for Pickles UVV and did very well.
A week ago, the righthander gave up six hits and struckout four batters in nine innings against De Glaskoning Twins and was the winning pitcher.
Today, Van Zijl struckout six and gave up only three basehits, but ended up empty-handed.
Kaj Timmermans, his counterpart at HCAW, struckout five batters and gave up eight basehits, but was the winning pitcher.
Jurjen van Zijl retired the first nine batters he faced.
His second pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning then decided the game.
After fouling off the first pitch, Roelie Henrique connected well on the next one and drove the ball into rightfield.
It was reported that the ball barely left the field, but his homerun would account for the lone run in the game.
And it was all HCAW needed today.
After Henrique's homerun, HCAW got into scoring position only two more times in the remainder of the game.
After giving up the homerun, Van Zijl followed with a strikeout, then walked Vince Rooi, but he was forced out.
In the fifth inning, with one out, Rachid Engelhardt and Sven Jongejans singled.
With that Engelhardt got into scoring position, but he was then forced out on third base on an inning-ending double play-grounder by Dylan Koster.
While this ended the at bat, it technically moved Jongejanse to second base, who then became the second and last runner of HCAW to get into scoring position.
In the next three innings, Van Zijl retired the side again, meaning he retired the last ten batters he faced.
UVV got more scoring opportunities, but left nine runners behind, including four in scoring position.
In the top of the first inning, with one out, HCAW-starter Kaj Timmermans gave up singles to Bryce Cherry and Tijmen Takke.
Cherry moved to third base on a flyout, but both runners were left behind.
In the second, Berend Ruben singled for UVV with one out, but was caught stealing after a pick-off.
Hereafter, Brandon Rijnbergen singled, but Timmermans closed with a strikeout.
In the third, Rick Kuipers led off with a single for the visitors, then moved on a sacrice bunt and a grounder, but stranded on third base.
In the fourth, Berend Ruben singled again for UVV, but hereafter, Kaj Timmermans retired nine batters in a row.
He then gave up a single to Brandon Rijnbergen with two outs in the seventh, but he was left on first base.
With two outs in the eighth inning, UVV got its next runner in scoring position when Tijmen Takke reached on an infield-hit and Sergino Martis walked, but a grounder followed.
In the top of the ninth, Oscar Meuris took over the HCAW-pitching and got UVV's final runner in scoring position.
He gave up a lead-off single to Julian Goins, who stole second base with one out.
But hereafter, Meuris struckout the next batter and a grounder ended the inning and the (fast-paced) game.
