Two weeks ago, the baseball-field on the site of Quick Amersfoort was transformed into a softball-field.
It was used as Field #2 during the European Men Softball Super Cup-tournament, which was hosted by Quick Amersfoort.
In the event, 19 teams participated coming from nine different countries, playing a total of 76 games in six days on three fields on the site of the Amersfoort-club.
During the tournament, the baseball-team had two home games scheduled, which it played in Almere at the site of Almere '90, which is the former club of Head Coach Marco Wels.
Today, Quick returned home and played an interesting game against Storks.
Quick failed to hold onto a apparent comfortable 6-2 lead, trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, but won 8-7.
In the ninth inning, the two scheduled starting pitchers for coming Tuesday's make-up game were pitching.
Both were credited with a Blown Save.
Quick Amersfoort opened the score with one run in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Martin Kram.
He gave up a lead-off single to Wesley Bernardus, who was forced out on a grounder by Niels van Weert.
Shortly thereafter, Van Weert scored on a 2-out single by Bryan Engelhardt, who himself was eliminated at second base.
Quick-starter Colin van Laar struckout nine batters today, but also got several baserunners.
After stranding a runner on second base in the first inning, Storks got in scoring position again in the third.
With one out, Giovanny Perez walked and Quinlan de Windt singled.
The two moved on a grounder, but stranded on second and third base.
After Quick left a runner behind on second base in the bottom of the third, Storks came alongside in the top of the fourth.
With two outs, Joran Berkhout singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Philip Brandl.
Quick appeared to re-take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Bryan Engelhardt and Jos de Jong opened with singles.
However, a strikeout followed, Engelhardt was caught stealing after a pick-off and another strikeout ended the at bat.
In the top of the fifth, Storks took a 2-1 lead, but again, a runner was eliminated at the bases in what was a 'time-play'.
With two outs, Jurriaan van Dijk doubled and scored on a following single by Niels Weis, who was then eliminated at second base trying to advance, but instead ended the inning.
Trailing 2-1, Quick struck with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning.
With one out, Jordy Burger singled and Wesley Bernardus walked.
Niels van Weert followed with a runscoring double that brought in the tying run.
With two outs, a force play was set up by walking Bryan Engelhardt intentionally, but the scoring continued hereafter.
With the bases loaded, Jos de Jong delivered a 2-run single and Remian Denis followed with another 2-run single to lift the lead to 6-2.
The 4-run difference was not enough, as Storks rallied for four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to come alongside for the second time.
Philip Brandl led off with a single and Giovanny Perez singled with one out.
Mees Cremer then took over the Quick-pitching.
He got a force play-grounder that accounted for the second out, but hereafter, the bases got loaded when Jurriaan van Dijk walked.
Cremer followed with another walk for Niels Weis that brought in a run and also led to a pitching change.
Jos de Jong, who was announced as starter for Tuesday's game, took over.
However, with the bases loaded, two costly errors followed, enabling all three runners to score to make it 6-6.
In the inning, there not only were four runs, two hits and two errors, but (because of the errors) also an interesting rule-challenge for the Official Scorers.
As there were three different pitchers, it not only had to be determined whether or not a run was earned, but also to whom the runs need to be credited.
One baserunner and the run he scored was credited to a previous pitcher.
He had reached on a fielder's choice which resulted in a force out of a runner he inherited from his predecessor.
With that, that previous pitcher became responsible for that batter-runner and the run he later scored.
But since it was scored on an error that could have become the third out, it was unearned.
In the eighth, Storks took a 7-6 lead when two more errors were made, resulting in an unearned run.
Lead-off hitter Joran Berkhout reached on an error.
With two outs, he scored on another error.
By the way, all four errors were made by two players who played at second base.
Now suddenly trailing 7-6, Quick left a runner on second base in the eighth inning and faced a possible loss in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Niels van Weert led off for Quick with a walk, which was followed by a pitching change.
Jurrian Koks, who like Jos de Jong was the announced starter for Tuesday, was brought in.
By the way, Koks and De Jong were teammates for four seasons when they played for Amsterdam Pirates in 2011-2014.
Koks faced Bas de Jong (also a teammate in the same years), who grounded out.
That brought Van Weert to second base and he stole third base moments later, followed by a walk for Bryan Engelhardt.
With runners at the corners, Jos de Jong executed a successful, squeeze-sacrifice bunt that enabled Van Weert to score the tying run.
With Engelhardt on second base, next hitter Remian Denis went after the first pitch he saw and delivered a walk-off single that gave Quick an 8-7 win.
As mentioned, both scheduled starters of coming Tuesday's game pitched in relief today.
Quick's Head Coach Marco Wels has now named lefthander Brian van Laar to start on Tuesday, instead of Jos de Jong, who pitched 2 1/3 inning (31 pitches) today.
Jurrian Koks might be the starter for Storks, as he threw only seven pitches today in 2/3 inning.
But that has not yet been confirmed.
