Twins stays unbeaten, hands DSS first loss
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - De Glaskoning Twins recorded a convincing 9-3 victory against DSS on Sunday (September 10) to remain unbeaten in the Promotion/Relegation Pool. With the win, Twins handed DSS its first loss in this Pool. Their first match-up on Saturday rained out and will be made up on Tuesday-evening in Haarlem.

A week ago, both Twins and DSS secured their stay in the big league for next season.

Today, it was Japan Day at the site of Twins in Oosterhout for the second time. With pitcher Daisuke Yamashita, Twins has the lone player from Japan in the Dutch big league this season. Last season, Twins organized the event 'Japan Day @ Twins Oosterhout' for the first time. Twins hosts this Japan promotion-day to support the baseball-team and to honor the good ties between Japan and the Netherlands. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Japanese Ambassador and baseball-fan Hiroshi Inomata, who did the same a year ago.

During the event, there was a lottery with more than 100 prizes, including baseball-memorabilia, such as autographed baseball signed by Dutch professional pitcher Rick van den Hurk. But there also was Japanese food and snacks. By the way, Japan-born Harumi Ueda was one of the two Official Scorers today.

DSS led 3-1 halfway the second inning, but Twins then came alongside and took it from there. DSS was held scoreless in the remainder of the game, while Twins took the lead in the third and took more distance in following innings.

Twins collected 13 basehits, including three by Bob van der Meer and Melvin Perdue, while Nick Peels scored three runs. Dennis De Quint homered for Twins and Sven van de Sanden did the same for DSS.

After Saturday's cancellation, it was announced that starter Tom Stuifbergen probably would move to today's game. However, that didn't happen, as the earlier announced starter for Sunday, Robyn Clara, started instead. It has not yet been announced whether Stuitfbergen now will start in the make-up game on Tuesday. Twins also stayed with its original announced starter for today, Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro. Saturday's scheduled starter Brendan Schoemaker probably will not start on Tuesday-evening, as he threw the ninth inning today.

Complete schedule

DSS opened the score in the top of the first inning with two unearned runs off of starter Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro. He saw lead-off hitter Odion Gouverneur reach on an error, then gave up a single to Kevin Nieveld, followed by a runscoring single from Omar Williams. Moments later, Williams was forced out on a grounder by Tino van Erk, but the second run was then scored on a grounder by Djewi Appelman.

Twins got one run back in its first at bat off of starter Robyn Claro. With one out, Jamie Verheyleweghen tripled and scored on an infield-hit by Dennis De Quint, who later stranded on second base.

In the second inning, DSS added another run when Sven van de Sanden led off with a homerun. Hereafter, with one out, Barry Beugeling (who made his debut) reached on an error and advanced on a single by Odion Gouverneur. The Twins-defense then turned an inning-ending double play.

In the remainder of the game, DSS was held scoreless. The team was retired in order in the third and fourth inning, but got into scoring position again in the fifth. With one out, Odion Gouverneur reached on an error and Kevin Nieveld walked. The two were awarded the next base on a balk, but then stayed behind.

DSS also got scoring-opportunities in the next three innings, but was unable to add more runs. In the sixth, off of new pitcher Daisuke Yamashita, Djewi Appelman led off with a single and moved on a wild pitch, but later stranded on third base. In the seventh, Kevin Nieveld doubled with two outs and was left behind. And in the eighth, off of Thijs Steenwijk, Tino van Erk reached on an error and Djewi Appelman doubled, but the next three batters were retired.

Trailing 3-1, Twins came alongside in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Mick Molenaar was hit by a pitch. With two outs, an error on a grounder by Nick Peels resulted in runners on second and third base. Both scored when Bob van der Meer followed with a 2-run single to make it a 3-3 score.

Twins took the lead in the third when Dennis De Quint led off with a homerun. Hereafter, Melvin Perdue walked, moved on a passed ball and scored on a 2-out double by Mick Molenaar to put Twins ahead, 5-3. That also led to a pitching change, as Sander Helmendach took over.

In the fourth inning, Twins scored another run. Nick Peels led off with a single and later scored on a single by Jamie Verheyleweghen. Twins got the bases loaded with one out, but the three runners were left behind.

After leaving two more runners in the fifth, Twins added its seventh run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Melvin Perdue reached on an infield-hit, stole second base, then scored on a 2-out single by Bram Grooten. But the team also left two more baserunners.

Twins lifted the lead to 9-3 in the seventh. Nick Peels led off with a walk and Bob van der Meer singled. Reggie Bomberg then took over the DSS-pitching, but he got the bases loaded when he walked Jamie Verheyleweghen. Moments later, Peels scored on a double play-grounder by Dennis De Quint and Van der Meer went on to score on a double by Melvin Perdue.

With a 9-3 lead, Brendan Schoemaker threw the ninth inning for Twins. With one out, he gave up an infield-hit to Odion Gouverneur, but a strikeout and foul-out then ended the game.
