Storks records convincing win against Quick Amersfoort
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Storks won the make-up game against Quick Amersfoort on Tuesday-evening (September 12) with a convincing 9-3 score. As Storks has no lights at its home site in The Hague, the game was scheduled to be played at the site of Euro Stars in Capelle aan den IJssel. However, that field became unplayable due to rain earlier in the day. In the afternoon, it was decided to move the game to the home site of Quick in Amersfoort, where it was played in the evening. Around 4 PM, everyone, including the game-officials, was informed that the game had moved from Capelle a/d IJssel to Amersfoort.

When Quick Amersfoort would have won tonight, it would have secured a spot in the top-4 of the Promotion/Relegation Pool and with that, it would have promoted to the Dutch big league. Quick Amersfoort is still in a good position to return to the highest division, but theoretically, there are still several scenarios possible, including four teams for the two remaining spots. DSS and De Glaskoning Twins already secured their stay in the big league a week ago. Quick Amersfoort and Storks appear to be the prime candidates for the other two spots, but Pickles UVV and Onze Gezellen still have chances to reach the top-4. In case of the right combinations, this all can result in a tie between two or even three teams. When that happens, tiebreaker games have to decide the final ranking.

Fact is that Onze Gezellen has to win its final two games coming weekend against Storks to remain in the race, but at the same time, UVV then has to lose once or twice against DSS. That could result in a tie of Onze Gezellen with Storks or in a 3-way tie with also UVV included.

UVV also is depending on results of other teams. When it wins twice coming weekend against DSS and Storks ends up losing twice against Onze Gezellen, UVV will finish in the top-4 with Quick Amersfoort. Other scenarios also will result in ties between two or three teams.

Quick needs one win to finish in the top-4, while Onze Gezellen will be eliminated with one loss.

Tonight, Storks broke a 2-2 tie with a 5-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to its victory. Storks collected ten basehits, including three by Nils Weis, who also batted in three runs. Two pitchers limited the Quick-offense to only four basehits. Last Sunday, Quick won 8-7 after Saturday's game had rained out.

Complete schedule

Storks opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starting pitcher Brian van Laar, who struckout nine batters and gave up only five hits in the six innings he pitched. With one out in the second, the lefthander walked Jurriaan van Dijk, who moved on a passed ball and a grounder. Moments later, he scored the first run on a wild pitch.

Storks left a runner behind on second base in the second inning. In this at bat, Van Laar struckout three batters, but he gave up an one-out single to Joost van de Bergh, who moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Storks doubled its lead in the third. Tijani Dunlop led off with a double and scored when Quinlan de Windt followed with a single. With one out, De Windt was caught stealing, but Storks then got two more baserunners when Gino Gil walked and Joran Berkhout singled, but they were left behind.

In the next three innings, Van Laar held Storks scoreless, who got into scoring position once in these three at bats.

Storks-starter Jurrian Koks threw six scoreless innings, before giving up two runs in the seventh. Quick got into scoring position in the second through fourth inning. In the second, with two outs, Jordy Burger (fielder's choice) stole second base, but Koks then closed with a strikeout. In the third, Carlos Leonard Ribalta led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt, but then also stranded, as two flyouts followed. In the fourth, Bas de Jong led off with a walk, but later was forced out on a grounder by Remian Denis, who then moved on a wild pitch, but also was left behind in scoring position when Koks closed with another strikeout.

After encountering no problems in the next two innings, Koks gave up two runs in the top of the seventh. He hit lead-off hitter Remian Denis with a pitch, then got runners on second and third base when a throwing error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Jordy Burger. Both scored when Luigino Rosaria followed with a 2-run single. Quick got a chance to do some more scoring hereafter, as it got the bases loaded. With one out, Rosaria stole second base and with two outs, Wesley Bernardus walked and Niels van Weert reached on a throwing error by Koks. However, Koks then recovered and with the bases loaded, he closed with his sixth strikeout in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Storks rallied for five runs to turn the game its way. T'Shawn James took over the pitching from Brian van Laar, but gave up a lead-off single to Giovanny Perez. Hereafter, everyone was then safe on a fielder's choice-sacrifice bunt by Tijani Dunlop. After the two runners had advanced on a grounder, a force play was created by walking Jurriaan van Dijk intentionally. But hereafter, James hit Gino Gil with a pitch and walked Joran Berkhout resulting in two runs. With the bases still loaded, Aaron Isenia was brought in as new pitcher, but he was greeted with a 2-run single by Nils Weis. The bases got loaded again when pinch-hitter Boudewijn van Elswijk walked and a following single by Philip Brandl brought in the fifth run in the inning. That made it a 7-2 lead for Storks, which then left three runners behind, as Isenia closed with two strikeouts.

Quick got one run back in the top of the eighth off of new pitcher Aaron de Groot. He got the bases loaded when Jos de Jong singled, Remian Denis walked and Jordy Burger also singled. With one out, he walked Carlos Leonoard Ribalta to bring in a run, but a line drive by Shairon Nicholas then ended in an inning-ending double play.

Storks took some more distance by adding two unearned runs in the eighth. Lead-off hitter Quinlan de Windt reached on an error and with two outs, Joran Berkhout walked. Mees Cremer then took over the pitching, but he gave up runscoring singles to Nils Weis and Boudewijn van Elswijk that lifted the lead to 9-3.
