UVV shuts out Onze Gezellen to stay in race
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Pickles UVV shutout Onze Gezellen 10-0 in eight innings in a make-up game on Tuesday-evening (September 12). Last Sunday, UVV suffered a surprising and costly 5-4 loss after the first game had rained out on Saturday.

With the win, UVV ended a 6-game losing streak and stayed in the race for one of the two remaining spot in the top-4 of the Promotion/Relegation Pool. The four best teams in this Pool will play in the highest league next year. However, UVV needs assistance from other teams to realize that.

DSS and De Glaskoning Twins already secured their stay in the big league a week ago. Quick Amersfoort and Storks appear to be the prime candidates for the other two spots, but UVV and Onze Gezellen still have chances to reach the top-4. In case of the right combinations, this all can result in a tie between two or even three teams. When that happens, tiebreaker games have to decide the final ranking.

When UVV wins once coming weekend in its final series against DSS, it needs two losses from Storks, which meets Onze Gezellen. In that case, these three teams end up in a tie, meaning tiebreaker games will follow. When UVV wins twice against DSS, it needs one or two losses from Storks. When Storks loses twice in this scenario, UVV will reach the top-4 with Quick Amersfoort. When Storks loses once and Quick loses twice against Twins, a 3-way tie will be created.

Onze Gezellen also needs two wins, but then needs assistance from UVV. The right combination then also can create a 2-way or 3-way tie.

Quick needs one win to finish in the top-4, while Onze Gezellen will be eliminated with one loss.

UVV collected 14 basehits tonight, including three by Rick Kuipers, who had been sidelined with an injury in recent weeks. The 14 hits were the most hit by UVV since it also had 14 on April 23 against HCAW. Eight of the nine players in the starting line-up had at least one basehit.

Onze Gezellen was limited to only four basehits by Jurjen van Zijl, who went the distance and struckout 13 batters. The 13 strikeouts are the most by UVV-pitching since 12 were recorded on two occassions during the 2015 season. The shutout was the first for UVV since it won 6-0 against DSS on August 28, 2015 in the Play-Downs.

Complete schedule

UVV opened the score in the second inning with two runs off of starter Tim van Leuven. With one out, Randy Daal walked and Julian Goins singled. Hereafter, Rick Kuipers also singled, but that ended in an unnecessary out. Daal overran third base, had no chance to score and was eliminated. On the play, Goins and Kuipers advanced to second and third base, then both scored when Brandon Rijnbergen followed with a single.

In the third inning, UVV got into scoring position again, but a double play followed.

UVV added a run in the fourth. Randy Daal led off with a bunt-single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Julian Goins. When next batter Rick Kuipers walked, Rob Dreijer took over the pitching from Tim van Leuven. With two outs, Daal stole third base, then was able to score when a throwing error followed.

UVV-pitcher Jurjen van Zijl retired the side in the first and second inning. He walked lead-off hitter Jelle Kroft in the third, but he was later forced out. In the fourh, Onze Gezellen got into scoring position for the first time without hitting basehit. With one out, Hugo Koehorst reached on an error and Tom Vreeken walked. But a strikeout and grounder followed.

Trailing 3-0, Onze Gezellen got a chance to do something back in the fifth, but stranded three runners. With one out, Ted Koehorst singled to end Van Zijl's No-Hitter. The righthander then walked Nils Mica and with two outs, he also walked Milan Lammerts to load the bases. The three runners were left behind when Van Zijl struckout his third batter in this inning.

UVV scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Tijmen Takke led off with a single, then Berend Ruben walked. However, on ball-four, the ball was thrown to second base ending in an error, that enabled Takke to score. On the error, Ruben advanced to third base and later scored on another error to make it a 5-0 score.

UVV took more distance in the following innings. The team added two runs in the sixth. Julian Goins led off with a single and Rick Kuipers reached on a bunt-single. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Tijmen Takke walked. Berend Ruben followed with a 2-run single to lift the lead to 7-0.

UVV again scored twice in the seventh at bat. Sergino Martis led off with a double, which led to a pitching change, as Jelle Kroft took over. He was greeted with a double from Rodney Daal, which brought Martis to third base. Randy Daal followed with a 2-run single which made it a 9-0 score. With one out, Daal moved to second base on an infield-hit by Rick Kuipers. However, the tenth mercy-rule run was not scored, as two flyouts followed, meaning the game continued.

Onze Gezellen left runners behind on first and second base in both the sixth and seventh inning. In the top of the eighth, UVV turned a double play, then reached a mercy-rule run-difference moments later. Tijmen Takke led off, struckout, but reached on a passed ball. He advanced on a wild pitch, moved to third base on a flyout, then scored the tenth run on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Rodney Daal.
