Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates scored three runs in the first three innings to take an early decisive lead and went on to win 5-3 in its second game against HCAW.

Amsterdam initially trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but then scored twice in the second inning thanks to a homerun by Linoy Croes. From that moment on, the squad hold onto the lead and enlarged it to 5-1. HCAW scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to turn the game around.

Amsterdam Pirates collected 12 basehits, including three by Nick Urbanus and Linoy Croes. Winning pitcher Kevin Heijstek gave up only four hits in the seven innings he pitched.

On Thursday-evening, Amsterdam opened the series with a 5-2 win. The series closes on Sunday in Amsterdam.

Complete schedule

Amsterdam Pirates faced a brief deficit after the first inning, but then took over the lead in the second at bat. The league-leader took more distance in following innings and led 5-1 when the bottom of the ninth inning began. HCAW then started a small rally, scored twice, but also left two baserunners behind.

HCAW opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Kevin Heijstek. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, then Vince Rooi walked with one out. Hereafter, Henrique scored when Kevin Dirksen followed with a single, but that also led to an out. Rooi tried to advance to third base, but was eliminated there on a throw from rightfielder Danny Rombley.

Amsterdam answered with two runs in the top of the second inning off of starter Kaj Timmermans. Danny Rombley led off with a single and Linoy Croes followed with a homerun. That gave Amsterdam a 2-1 lead and from that moment on, it hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

Amsterdam Pirates added a run in the third at bat. With one out, Zerzinho Croes tripled and scored on a single by Nick Urbanus, who was then eliminated in a double play.

The HCAW-defense turned another double play in the fourth and Timmermans retired the side in the fifth. Amsterdam then scored its next run in the sixth, which ended with HCAW's third double play. Nick Urbanus led off with a single and Gilmer Lampe walked. The bases got loaded when Linoy Croes singled with one out. Hereafter, Patrick Bok hit what appeared to be a double play-grounder. His grounder indeed resulted in a double play, but not a 'regular' one. Croes was forced out on second base, Urbanus scored and Lampe advanced to third base. However, the attempt to complete the double play at first base was unsuccessful, as Bok reached safely. In the meantime, Lampe overran third base and went towards the plate, but the ball then was thrown from first base to the catcher, who eliminated the runner to end the inning.

HCAW turned another double play in the seventh inning, but Amsterdam scored another insurance run in the eighth off of new pitcher Moreno Vork. Zerzinho Croes led off with a double, moved to third base on an one-out single by Gilmer Lampe, then scored when the latter was forced out on a grounder by Danny Rombley.

After giving up the run in the first inning, Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek did well in the following innings. The righthander retired the side in the second, third (three strikeouts) and fourth inning. After having retired 11 consecutive batters in a row, Heijstek gave up an one-out ground-rule double to Seb Visser in the fifth, but he later stranded on third base. In the sixth, Dylan Koster singled for HCAW with one out, but would be left behind at second base.

Heijstek retired the side again in the seventh, then was relieved by Nick Veltkamp in the eighth. The lefthander gave up an one-out double to Raoell Kortstam and hit Roelie Henrique with a pitch, but then the Amsterdam-defense turned an inning-ending double play.

HCAW brought the suspense back in the game in the bottom of the the ninth off of new pitcher Daan Hendrix. With one out, he got the bases loaded when Kevin Dirksen, pinch-hitter Rachid Engelhardt and Kevin Weijgertse all singled. Dirksen's pinch-runner (pitcher) Tim Niekerk and Engelhardt then scored when Seb Visser followed with a double that made it a 5-3 score. With runners now on third and second base and only one out, the tying run was on second base. However, a flyout followed and Hendrix closed the game with a strikeout.
