HCAW and Neptunus play exhibition games
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM / OOSTERHOUT / BUSSUM / AMERSFOORT / HAARLEM (Neth.) - A week ago, the regular season in the Dutch big league ended. This weekend, on Sunday (August 13), the All Star Game was initially scheduled. However, as proposed plans for this day could not be realized, the All Star Game was cancelled somewhere in April or May, but that has never been published officially.

So, the clubs had the weekend off. An option would have been to move up the start of the second half of the season with the Championship Pool and Promotion/Relegation Pool a week. The Championship Pool opens next Thursday (August 17), the Promotion/Relegation Pool opens next Saturday (August 19). However, this weekend also was the conclusion of the European Under-23 Championship in the Czech Republic. With that, some teams missed a few players. On the other hand, these teams also missed these players last weekend, when they played the final regular season-games.

So, with the weekend off, a few clubs scheduled some exhibition games to stay in playing rhythm. Curaçao Neptunus scheduled two games against De Glaskoning Twins on Thursday-evening and Saturday-afternoon. HCAW scheduled two games in the weekend against Quick Amersfoort, which is one of the three teams from the second highest league that will play in the Promotion/Relegation Pool. Onze Gezellen, which also will play in this Pool, played one game against Kinheim.

Neptunus shutout Twins 11-0 in the first game on Thursday in Rotterdam. The game that was scheduled for Saturday was cancelled, due to rainy conditions in Oosterhout. HCAW won 8-5 and 12-5 vs. Quick Amersfoort, while Onze Gezellen won 11-0 against Kinheim on Sunday.

(August 10-13)

Complete schedule

Curaçao Neptunus vs. De Glaskoning Twins (Thursday, August 10)
Neptunus rallied for five runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Twins-starter Jan Evertse to take an early comfortable lead. With one out, the bases got loaded when Benjamin Dille singled, Gianison Boekhoudt walked and Dwayne Kemp also singled. Hereafter, Daniel Fernandes delivered a 2-run single and Shaldimar Daantji followed with a 2-run triple. Moments later, Daantji scored the next run himself on a sacrifice fly by Brian Raap.

Neptunus added two runs in the second at bat. Jochem Koedijk led off with a single, then moved on a double from rookie Den Seelbach, who was the 10th hitter in the battting order. Koedijk went on to score on a passed ball, while Seelbach scored on a grounder from Stijn van der Meer.

Neptunus was held scoreless in the next three innings, but added four more runs in the sixth at bat off of reliever Mic van de Ven. With one out, the bases were loaded when Van de Ven walked a batter and hit two. The first run in the inning was then scored on a single from Stijn van der Meer. A sacrifice fly by Benjamin Dille brought in the next run. With two outs and after the bases were re-loaded via a walk, Australian Jeremy Atkinson took over the pitching for Twins. Brian Raap then hit the ball into the outfield, where is ended in an error that accounted for two more runs and lifted the lead to 11-0.

Neptunus collected only one more basehit than Twins (9-8). However, Twins was held scoreless by pitchers Diegomar Markwell and Orlando Yntema.

Markwell threw the first three innings for Neptunus. In the second inning, the lefthander gave up singles to Mick Molenaar and Tair Vurtaal. The first was caught stealing, the second stranded on first base. In the third, Thijs Steenwijk (who is a pitcher) led off with a single, but a double play followed.

Yntema took over in the fourth inning and threw the final six innings. The righthander, who returned into action three weeks ago, delivered 84 pitches and looked good. In the fourth, Bram Grooten led off for Twins and reached on an error. Chris Ge followed with a single, but a double play and strikeout followed. Yntema also gave up basehits in each of the next four innings, but no runner reached third base. Yntema struckout six batters.

Markwell was relieved after three innings with a 7-0 lead. Since this is an exhibition game, he will be the winning pitcher. In exhibition games, starters doesn't need to throw the required five complete innings, as is the rule in regular season-games. In exhibition games, pitchers mostly throw a specific total of innings or are on pitch-count and so, different rules are effective. As Yntema threw six effective innings as the closer in this game, he was credited with a save. A closer is credited with a save when he throws at least three effective innings, whatever the score.

HCAW vs. Quick Amersfoort (Saturday, August 12)
Recently, a new pitching mound had been installed at the site of HCAW. Whether this was of influence in today's game is the question, but fact is that the eight pitchers used in this game by the two teams combined walked 21 batters! The five HCAW-hurlers walked twelve, the three Quick-pitchers walked nine. That resulted in a lot of baserunners and a close game.

HCAW took an 1-0 lead in the first inning when Roelie Henrique led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vince Rooi.

The lead was shortlived, as Quick came alongside in the second at bat. HCAW-starter Jim Ploeger walked four batters in this inning, but Quick also left three runners behind. Jos de Jong and Jules Cremer led off with walks. De Jong then advanced on a force play-grounder and later scored on a wild pitch.

HCAW re-took the lead in the second inning. Quick-starter Brian van Laar walked Rossini Frolijk and Kevin Weijgertse, who later scored on a grounder and a wild pitch.

Quick answered with a run in the third when Niels van Weert led off with a walk off of new pitcher Giovanni Tensen. He later scored on a single by Jules Cremer, but again three runners were left behind.

HCAW took some more distance by scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the third when the Quick-defense made two errors.

In the fourth, Quick scored its third run when Jody Burger singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jos de Jong. HCAW made it a 6-3 score in its fourth at bat off of new pitcher Dennis van den Bunt via a sac-fly by Vince Rooi.

Quick narrowed the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth off of Moreno Vork, who had took over the pitching in the previous at bat. In the fifth, Luigino Rosaria (single) and Shairon Nicolas (walk) scored with two outs on a basesloaded single by Niels van Weert.

For Quick, these were the last runs it scored. In the final four innings of the game, the team reached base only two more times off of relievers Jasper Elfrink and Steven van Groningen. Elfrink took over in the fifth and got an inning-ending force play-grounder, then retired the side in the sixth. Van Groningen threw three fine innings, walking two batters. When this would have been a regular season-game, Van Groningen would be credited with the win. Starting pitcher Jim Ploeger left with a lead, but didn't pitch the required five complete innings. Van Groningen was the most effective reliever. However, since this was an exhibition game, a starter is always credited with a win when he leaves with a lead, whatever the total of innings pitched.

HCAW scored its final two (unearned) runs in the seventh off of reliever Mees Cremer to make it an 8-5 score.

Quick Amersfoort vs. HCAW (Sunday, August 13)
The second game between HCAW and Quick Amersfoort was more lopsided than the day before, as HCAW led 11-2 after six innings. HCAW collected 19 basehits in the game off of five pitchers, including three by Raoell Kortstam and a homerun by Rossini Frolijk.

HCAW opened the score with two runs in the second inning off of starter Jos de Jong. Vince Rooi led off with a double, moved on a flyout and scored the first run on a single by Rossini Frolijk, who later scored himself on a basesloaded single by Roelie Henrique.

The Bussum-squad added two runs in the fourth on a 2-run double by Kevin Dirksen.

HCAW-starter Ian Delemarre threw three scoreless innings, facing only nine hitters. In the second inning, he gave up a lead-off single to Bryan Engelhardt, who earlier this season transfered from Kinheim to Quick Amersfoort. Moments later, he was eliminated in a double play.

Quick scored its first run in the fourth. Jordy Burger led off with a single, then the bases got loaded when Niels van Weert reached on an error and Bas de Jong singled. Burger then scored when Engelhardt grounded into a double play.

HCAW enlarged the lead by scoring four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth inning. In the fifth, HCAW scored on five consecutive basehits, including a 2-run single by Roelie Henrique and runscoring singles by Dylan Koster and Kevin Dirksen. In the sixth, Rossini Frolijk hit a 2-run homerun, then another run was added on a grounder by Raoell Kortstam, which increased the lead to 11-2. A single by Kortstam accounted for the twelfth run in the eighth inning.

Trailing 11-2, Quick scored its third run in the sixth off of reliever Jasper Popken. Jordy Burger then again led off with a single and later scored on a 2-out single by pinch-hitter Shairon Nicolas.

In the bottom of the ninth, Quick scored three more runs off of closer Sedley Karel. With one out, the righthander got the bases loaded when pinch-hitter Jerry Zonneveld walked, Jos de Jong singled and guest-player Siegert Flaneur also walked. A walk for Kai Berkel, a sacrifice fly from Luigino Rosaria and a wild pitch then accounted for the three runs. Karel then closed the game with a strikeout.
