HILVERSUM (Neth.) - Former pitcher Gilbert van den Bergh, who played in the Dutch big league for several seasons, has passed away on Wednesday, October 11 at the much too young age of 43 after a courageous battle with a severe illness.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at Cemetery Nieuw Valkeveen at the Valkeveenselaan 58 in Naarden. This service begins at 2 PM. Afterwards, there is an opportunity to offer condolences to the family. The ceremony will be preceeded by a closed memorial service in the morning.

As a righthanded pitcher, Gilbert van den Bergh played in the Dutch big league for HCAW and De Spartaan. At age 17, Van den Bergh made his debut in the main squad of HCAW during the 1991 season, appearing in two games. He made one start and pitched once in relief in this season, earning one victory.

Van den Bergh then also played for the Bussum-club in 1992 and 1993 and was then mostly used as a reliever. Amongst his teammates in these years were Reinier Abrahamsen, Roy Berrevoets, Jeffrey Cranston, Lars Koehorst, Jurjan Koenen, Edsel Martis, Clive Mendes and Ralph Milliard. Other pitchers on the HCAW-roster these years include Patrick van Doorn, Jan van Gorkum, Caspar van Rijnbach, Patrick Tensen and Danny Wout.

In 1995, Gilbert van den Bergh played one season for Amsterdam-based De Spartaan. There, he also mostly pitched in relief, but also made two starts. While playing for De Spartaan, he earned the lone save in his big league-career. Amongst his teammates at De Spartaan were current Hoofddorp Pioniers 1B Coach Angelo Clemensia and current Storks Head Coach Aldric Dunlop.

Amsterdam-born Gilbert van den Bergh started his baseball-career at De Zuidvogels in Huizen. After concluding his years in the big league, Van den Bergh returned to this club, where he continued his baseball-career, but also played softball. In recent years, he played for the main men softball-team of De Zuidvogels. There, he also was active as a youth coach.

The webmaster of Grand Slam * Stats & News offers his condolences to Gilbert's wife Chantal, their children and other family and wishes them a lot of strength with this huge loss.
