Puerto Rico defeats Dominicans in Second Round-opener
Nederlands

SAN DIEGO, California (USA) - Puerto Rico won 3-1 against the Dominican Republic on Tuesday-evening (March 14) in the opening game of Pool F in the Second Round of the World Baseball Classic at Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres in San Diego.

Both teams won their respective Pool in the First Round by winning three games. Reigning WBC-champion Dominican Republic won Pool C in México, while Puerto Rico was the winner of Pool D in Miami (USA).

Puerto Rico opened the score in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Yadier Molina (St. Louis Cardinals). The Dominicans came alongside in the second at bat when Nelson Cruz (Seattle Mariners) homered. An umpire review followed, but the call was upheld and so, the score was tied at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Puerto Rico re-took the lead. With one out, Javier Baez (Chicago Cubs) reached on an error, then scored on a ground-rule double by Eddie Rosario (Minnesota Twins).

In the sixth, it was Yadier Molina who homered for Puerto Rico to increase the lead to 3-1. And that also was to be the final score.
