Pioniers wins against UVV on cultural evening
Nederlands
HOOFDDORP (Neth.) -
Hoofddorp Pioniers won 8-1 against Pickles UVV on Thursday-evening (June 15) to open a 3-game series, which will be concluded this weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday in Vleuten.
Pioniers will play both weekend-games away, as its home-complex will be the site of the National Little League Championship in both baseball and softball.
Pioniers opened the score in the well-visited game quickly with two runs in the first inning, then decided the game by scoring four runs in the sixth.
The 4-run sixth was highlighted by back-to-back homeruns from Shurman Marlin and Jeffrey Arends.
Both teams collected eleven basehits.
Winning pitcher Lars Huijer struckout eight batters in eight innings.
With tonight's loss, UVV was officially eliminated for first place.
Tonight, culture and classical music went hand-in-hand with sports.
This year, June is the month of cultural activities.
On more than 1,000 locations in more than 200 municipalities, all kinds of arts-forms are performed by amateur performers during the 'iktoon'-campagne.
With 'iktoon', cultural institutions, clubs, professional teachers and amateur art performers throughout the country give a positive impulse to the basis for arts and culture.
'iktoon' is an initiative of the National Institure of Knowledge for Cultural Education and Amateur Arts (LKCA) and the Foundation WAK Nederland (Week of the Amateur Arts).
Performing before the game inside the club's restaurant and outside on the terrace was the 37-member Youth Symphony Orchestra Bloembollenstreek (age 12 to 25) together with the Academic Chamber Orchestra of Pier K.
Conducting the orchestra was Eric Waerts.
During the beautiful performance, the orchestra performed compositions of the German composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767).
The Symphony Orchestra Bloembollenstreek, which is located in Lisse, has three amateur symphony orchestras in different age groups.
All three orchestras have regular performances.
The Youth Symphony Orchestra that was in the baseball-stadium tonight, has a wide repertoire, varying classic to modern, from baroque to popular and from music of films to that of musicals.
Each year, this orchestra gives three big concerts.
Pier K is the centre for arts and culture for all ages in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer (to which Hoofddorp belongs).
Pier K organizes courses, workshops, projects, expositions, performances and many other activities in music, singing, sculpture art, textile, photography, dance, theater & musical and literature.
Annually, some 10,000 individuals participate in these projects and courses.
Between some innings, students of Meer Dance & Events performed.
This dancing school, which is located in Hoofddorp, offers dancing lessons in classical ballet, breakdance, streetdance, hiphop new style, showdance, modern dance, dancing techniques, kiddies dance and pamperdance.
Halfway the seventh inning, 'Take Me Out To The Ball Game' was performed live by Monique Stam and Martie van Kampen of Jazz 'n More.
They also sang 'Sweet Caroline' halfway the eighth inning.
Throughout the game, Martin performed on a Hammond-organ.
The entire month, several paintings are exhibited at the site of Pioniers.

Pioniers took an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning off of starter Timo van Ancum.
Joey Eeman led off with a double, moved on a flyout, then scored the first run on a grounder by Shurman Marlin.
With two outs, Jeffrey Arends walked, advanced to third base on a single by Quintin De Cuba and scored on a following single by Max Draijer.
The Pioniers-offense was then silenced in the next four innings.
In this span, the team recorded only one basehit.
With one out in the second, Van Ancum walked Sander Paap, who was then picked off moments later.
The righthander retired the side in the third inning, then gave up a lead-off single to Quintin De Cuba in the third.
He was forced out on a grounder by Glenn Bakker, who then was caught stealing after another pick-off.
Van Ancum retired the side again in the fifth.
Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer got several baserunners, but UVV was unable to score.
In the first inning, the righthander gave up an one-out single to Tijmen Takke, but he was forced out.
In the second at bat, with one out, Huijer gave up a single to Mike Bazuin and a double to Julian Rip, but then closed with two strikeouts.
With two outs in the third, Berend Ruben singled for UVV with two outs, but was left behind on first base.
In the fourth, Julian Goins led off for UVV with a single, then was forced out on a grounder by Mike Bazuin.
The latter initially reached first base safely, but was called out for runner's interference by Goins at second base.
In the fifth, UVV stranded two runners.
Huijer began with two strikeouts, then gave up single to Tijmen Takke and Berend Ruben, but a flyout ended the at bat.
In the sixth, Julian Goins led off with a single, but was caught stealing.

And so, the bottom of the sixth inning began with Pioniers still leading only 2-0.
The home team then decided the game by scoring four runs.
With one out, Shurman Marlin and Jeffrey Arends hit back-to-back homeruns to make it a 4-0 score.
Hereafter, Quintin De Cuba walked and Max Draijer singled, resulting in a pitching change.
Jonah Van Bemmelen took over and got a flyout.
The side-armer then gave up a runscoring single to Gianni Frolijk and got the bases loaded when he walked Sander Paap.
That brought out new Head Coach Ritchie Daal for the third time this inning.
He brought in Roderick Hennekes, who walked Joey Eeman, which gave Pioniers another run.
Three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the inning.
Pioniers added another run in the eighth.
With one out, Sander Paap doubled, moved on a single by Joey Eeman and scored when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Duco Nuijten.
UVV scored its lone run in the top of the ninth in which the team used three pinch-hitters (who all singled!) and one pinch-runner, two of them being pitchers.
It was also the inning of a reversed call.
Maickel Rietel took over the pitching for Pioniers.
With one out, he gave up a single to pinch-hitter Steven van Reem, who was replaced by (pitcher) José Moreno as pinch-runner.
Hereafter, pinch-hitter Bryce Cherry also singled.
With runners on first and second base, (pitcher) Kevin van Veen became the third pinch-hitter and he also singled, enabling Moreno to score.
A flyout then accounted for the second out and that brought Berend Ruben in the batter's box.
With runners on first and second base, on an 0-1 count, he hit the ball towards the leftfield foul-pole.
Initially, this was ruled a homerun, but it also led to confusion whether or not it was a foul ball.
Cherry was en route to third base, while Van Veen approached from first base.
Near third base, Van Veen passed Cherry, then both runners continued towards the plate, as did Ruben.
After Pioniers' Head Coach Dè Flanegin argued about the homerun, the 3-man umpiring crew came together.
As we have no challenge in Dutch baseball, it is up to the judgement of the umpires.
A let's say it, our umpires are doing a GREAT job!
After a brief conversation, the umpires took the correct decision by ruling the hit by Ruben a foul ball.
Home Plate Umpire John Beltman, who had a fine evening calling balls and strikes behind the plate, announced that it was no homerun.
With that, the runners returned to their bases and Ruben returned at bat.
He then walked to load the bases, but a flyout ended the game.
By the way, when Ruben's homerun would have been fair, Van Veen would have been ruled out for passing the preceding runner.
Since it would have been the third out, this would have annulled the homerun and end the inning.
In this case, Ruben would have been credited with a single.
