Narrow escape HCAW in Haarlem
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - HCAW had a narrow escape on a sunny Saturday-afternoon (June 17) in Haarlem, but left the field victorious, winning 7-6 against DSS.

HCAW had an apparent comfortable 7-2 lead after seven innings, but DSS staged one of its now famous comebacks. The Haarlem-squad scored three runs in the eighth inning and HCAW's bullpen almost failed to hold onto the lead. The team added a run in the ninth to narrow the deficit to only 7-6 and had the bases loaded, but a line drive then ended in a game-ending double play.

HCAW collected 10 basehits, including three by Rowan van Hoek and Kevin Weijgertse, while Rachid Engelhardt homered. Sven van de Sanden homered for DSS in the well-visited game at the cozy home-site in Haarlem.

Complete schedule

HCAW opened the score with one run in the top of the first inning off of starter Lars Vogelaar. However, in the following innings, HCAW was unable to take more distance, then DSS came alongside in the fourth. In the fifth, HCAW re-took the lead and was leading 7-2 after seven innings. The suspense was building when DSS came back to cut the deficit to 7-6. The home team had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but was left empty-handed.

In the first inning, with one out, Boyd Tuhumury and Vince Rooi both walked. With two outs, Rowan van Hoek delivered a runscoring single to put HCAW ahead, 1-0.

In the second inning, HCAW got its first two batters on base when Kevin Weijgertse led off with a single and Rachid Engelhardt walked. But they stranded on second and third base when Vogelaar closed with a strikeout.

HCAW-starter Kaj Timmermans gave up an one-out single to Mitchel Dautzenberg in the bottom of the first, but was then supported with a double play. After having retired the side in the second, Timmermans started the third inning with two strikeouts. Thomas Bos then singled for DSS, but was forced out.

As HCAW was unable to take more distance, it was a matter of time that DSS would come alongside or take over the lead. In the bottom of the fourth, DSS did score the tying run. Lead-off hitter Mitchel Dautzenberg reached on an error, then scored with two outs on a double down the leftfield-line by Tino van Erk to make it an 1-1 score.

HCAW re-took the lead in the top of the fifth. Lars Vogelaar hit lead-off hitter Seb Visser with a pitch, then got the bases loaded when he walked Dylan Koster and gave up a bunt-single to Roelie Henrique. Reggie Bomberg then was brought in as reliever. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Boyd Tuhumury and a runscoring single to Vince Rooi that made it 3-1 in favor of HCAW. A double play ended the at bat.

DSS got one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Sven van de Sanden led off with a homerun.

This time, HCAW took more distance by adding three runs in the sixth. Rowan van Hoek led off with a double and Kevin Weijgertse singled. The two scored when Rachid Engelhardt followed with his first homerun of the season to lift the lead to 6-2. The Bussum-squad added another run in the seventh. With two outs, Kevin Dirksen singled and scored on a double by Rowan van Hoek.

For HCAW, the scoring stopped here. But for DSS, it was time to stage another late-inning comeback, as the bullpen of HCAW walked seven batters, gave up two hits and made a runscoring balk. HCAW was the better team in the first seven innings, but the final two (and almost deciding) innings clearly belonged to DSS.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tim Niekerk took over from starter Kaj Timmermans. The righthander got the bases loaded quickly. He walked Thomas Bos and Odion Gouverneur, then gave up an infield-hit to Kevin Nieveld. Niekerk then also walked next batter Koen Halderman to bring in a run. Hereafter, Oscar Meuris took over the pitching. With one out, he gave up a runscoring single to Tino van Erk, who made some great defensive plays as first baseman. With the bases still loaded, a balk was called, resulting in the next run, which narrowed the deficit to 7-5. Meuris closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sedley Karel took the mound for HCAW, but he also ran into problems. He walked lead-off hitter Levine Gabriëls, but followed with a strikeout. Karel then got the bases loaded when he also walked Odion Gouverneur and Kevin Nieveld, which led to another pitching change. Giovanni Tensen took over, but he walked Koen Halderman to bring in another run and make it a 7-6 score. With the bases loaded and only one out, HCAW's lead clearly was in jeopardy, while DSS appeared to have another successful comeback. With on 0-2 count, powerhitter Omar Williams lined the ball to second baseman Dylan Koster. He caught the ball and completed a game-ending double play at first base, as Halderman had left his base.
