Neptunus outscores Twins; Van Mil makes comeback on mound
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus outscored De Glaskoning Twins 9-4 on Saturday (June 17) to win the second game of the 3-game series between the two teams. The series ends on Sunday in Oosterhout.

Neptunus scored three runs in the first inning, led only 4-2 after two at bats, but took more distance in the fourth inning. Neptunus outhit Twins 13-12. Stijn van der Meer hit 4-for-5 for Neptunus and scored three runs.

Neptunus-closer Loek van Mil made his first appearance of the season. The righthander had been sidelined with a back-injury since returning from the World Baseball Classic with the Netherlands Kingdom Team in March. He could already have seen some action last Thursday, but that game ended after eight innings, due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule. In his first game back on the mound, Van Mil threw 41 pitches in 1 2/3 inning in which he struckout two batters, but also gave up five hits and two earned runs.

Complete schedule

Neptunus rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro, who gave up four consecutive hits to start the inning. Neptunus opened the score quickly, as Stijn van der Meer led off with a single, next batter Benjamin Dille doubled and both scored on a double by Christian Diaz, who then stole third base and scored on a following single by Dwayne Kemp to make it a 3-0 score.

Twins got two runs back in the second inning off of starter Diegomar Markwell. The lefthander retired the side in the first inning, but in the second at bat, he gave up three hits and two earned runs, despite two errors were made during pick-off attempts. Melvin Perdue led off with a single and reached third base when Markwell threw the ball past first baseman Gregory Muller during a pick-off. Markwell followed with a strikeout, then gave up a runscoring double to Christopher Ge. With two outs, Ge scored the second run on a single by Mick Molenaar. The latter then got into a rundown after another pick-off, but this time, it was Muller who made a throwing error. That enabled Molenaar to reach second base safely, but he stranded there.

Neptunus added a run in the bottom of the second inning. Jochem Koedijk led off with a single, moved to third base on a single by Stijn van der Meer and scored on a grounder by Benjamin Dille. Hereafter, Christian Diaz singled, but Neptunus left runners behind on second and third base.

Twins got another scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth inning. Nick Peels led off with a single and stole second base. Moments later, he was caught stealing after a pick-off. With two outs, Gino Jonis and Mick Molenaar both singled, but they were left behind.

In the bottom of the fourth, Neptunus took some more distance by scoring three runs with two outs. With one out, Stijn van der Meer singled and with two outs, Christian Diaz reached on an error. Both scored on a single by Dwayne Kemp, who went on to score the next run on a double by Gianison Boekhoudt to make it a 7-2 score. That led to a pitching change, as Jan Evertse took over from Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro. The rookie closed with a strikeout, then threw three strong innings and retired the side each time.

Twins scored another run in the eighth inning off of Loek van Mil, who took over the pitching from Diegomar Markwell. The righthander gave up a lead-off double to Dennis De Quint, then a single to Melvin Perdue. Van Mil struckout the next two batters, then gave up a runscoring single to Gino Yonis that made it a 7-3 score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Neptunus scored two more runs off of Jan Evertse. Ruar Verkerk and Daniel Fernandes began the at bat with walks. Next batter Jochem Koedijk then popped the ball up near the short stop-area. While the ball appeared to be catchable, no infield-fly was called. Short stop Bob van der Meer made the catch and as Verkerk was off second base, he was doubled up. Hereafter, Stijn van der Meer (Bob's brother) delivered an RBI-triple and scored when Benjamin Dille followed with a single to lift the lead to 9-3.

In the top of the ninth, Twins scored its final run. With one out, Jamie Verheyleweghen singled off of Van Mil, then moved on a wild pitch. The bases got loaded when Bram Grooten walked and Menno Lenting singled. After next batter Melvin Perdue fouled out, Van Mil was relieved by Misja Harcksen. He began with a wild pitch that enabled Verheyleweghen to score, but then closed the inning and the game with a strikeout.
