UVV opened the score with three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Chris Pfau.
The lefthander got two quick outs, but then walked Berend Ruben.
He then scored all the way from first base on a single by Sergino Martis.
Hereafter, Mike Bazuin also singled and Tijmen Takke followed with a 2-run double to make it a 3-0 score.
Pfau then got the bases loaded when he walked Julian Rip and Giovanni Samboe, but three runners were left behind when the American hurler closed with a strikeout.
Samboe was the catcher for UVV today and played in his first game for the team since April 20.
Back then, he also was the catcher in the away-game at HCAW and batted 1-for-4.
UVV added another run in the second inning.
Rick Kuipers led off with a bunt-single, then two errors followed and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Berend Ruben.
Pioniers got into scoring position for the first time in the top of the second inning.
Max Draijer then reached second base on an error and moved on a wild pitch, but stranded on third base.
Trailing 4-0, Pioniers got two runs back in the third at bat.
Sander Paap then led off with a single and scored on a triple by Joey Eeman, who then went on to score himself on a sacrifice fly by Mervin Gario.
UVV took some more distance by scoring again in the bottom of the third.
Tijmen Takke led off with a single, stole second base with one out and scored on a 2-out double by Brandon Rijnbergen to make it a 5-2 score.
Hereafter, four scoreless innings followed.
In the fourth, Pioniers left a runner behind on third base.
The team got its first two batters on base in the fifth, but then the next three batters were retired.
In the seventh, the UVV-defense turned a double play.
UVV got a scoring opportunity in the sixth.
With one out, Bryce Cherry was hit by a pitch and Berend Ruben singled.
That led to a pitching change, as Glenn Wassink took over from Chris Pfau.
A force play-grounder and line out then ended the at bat.
In the top of the eighth, Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 5-4 by scoring twice.
Mervin Gario led off with an infield-hit.
He stole second base with one out, then advanced on a single by Jeffrey Arends.
The latter was replaced by pinch-runner Mark Smit, who got second base on fielder's indifference.
With two outs, both runners scored on a single by Glenn Bakker.
UVV added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Pinch-hitter Steven van Reem led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Jeff Delfina, who played in his first game of the season for UVV.
Delfina last played in the big league (and for UVV) during the 2012 season.
Since then, he mostly played softball.
Delfina stole second base, then scored when an outfield-error followed a single by Bryce Cherry.
In the top of the ninth, Pioniers got the bases loaded.
With one out, Joey Eeman singled, then an error on a force play-grounder by Brennan Nijhof led to runners at the corners.
Mervin Gario followed with an infield-hit, which kept Eeman at third base and loaded the bases.
A pitching change followed, as Jerremyh Angela took over from starter Jurjen van Zijl.
The righthander threw only one pitch to Shurman Marlin, who grounded into a game-ending double play.
And that earned Angela a rare 'one-pitch-save'.
