Amsterdam Pirates reaches Holland Series after win at HCAW
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded an 8-4 victory on Sunday (September 17) against HCAW. With the win, Amsterdam became the second team to reach the Holland Series. On Thursday and on Saturday, the first games of this 3-game series rained out. These games will be made up on Monday and Tuesday.

One hour and five minutes earlier, Curaçao Neptunus had finished its game against Hoofddorp Pioniers, winning 15-4 in seven innings to become the first team to reach the Championship Final. Neptunus and Amsterdam Pirates will open the best-of-seven Holland Series on Thursday, September 28. Last year, the two teams also faced each other in the Final. Both teams have five games remaining in the Championship Pool. These games will decide first and second place, which will determine the home advantage in the Championship Final. Currently, Neptunus is in first place and Amsterdam in second. Starting on Thursday-evening, the two teams will close the Championship Pool with a 3-game series against each other. In the remainder of this Pool, Hoofddorp Pioniers still can theoretically end up in a tie with Amsterdam, but the head-to-head result is in favor of Pirates. Amsterdam has won five of the six games it played against Hoofddorp.

Today, Amsterdam Pirates led 4-0 halfway the fifth inning, but HCAW came alongside. Amsterdam immediately answered with a 4-run rally in the seventh inning to re-take the lead en route to the victory.

Amsterdam recorded 13 basehits, including three by Zerzinho Croes. Eight of the nine starting players hit at least one basehit. Croes also scored three runs, while Kenny Berkenbosch batted in three runs.

Delano Selassa had three basehits for HCAW.

Complete schedule

Amsterdam Pirates got into scoring position right away in the top of the first inning off of starter Kaj Timmernans. The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Remco Draijer, who moved on two grounders, but then stranded on third base.

Amsterdam then opened the score in the third at bat. With two outs, Zerzinho Croes singled and scored on a following double by Nick Urbanus, who later was left behind on second base.

Pirates took more distance in the fifth inning by scoring three runs. Lead-off hitter Max Clarijs struckout, but reached on a wild pitch. With one out, the bases got loaded when Zerzinho Croes singled and Nick Urbanus was hit by a pitch. Two runs were then scored when Gilmer Lampe doubled down the leftfield-line. Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 score.

Amsterdam-starter Rob Cordemans didn't encounter much problems in the first four innings. HCAW got some baserunners, but never got into scoring position.

Trailing 4-0, HCAW suddenly came back into the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Cordemans. The Bussum-squad recorded four basehits. Rossini Frolijk led off with a single and Rachid Engelhardt walked. The two moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Seb Visser, then both scored when Kevin Weijgertse followed with a 2-run single. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Dylan Koster and Delano Selassa also singled. Weijgertse was then forced out at the plate on a grounder by Roelie Henrique, but when a throwing error followed, Koster was able to score and narrow the deficit to 4-3. Two runners were left behind when a flyout ended the at bat.

HCAW came alongside in the bottom of the sixth off of Kyle Ward. The lefthander had been sidelined with an injury for several weeks and made his first appearance in the Championship Pool. Ward last pitched in for Amsterdam on May 14 when he threw five innings, also against HCAW, and was the winning pitcher. Since then, he is working on his recovery and today, he threw on a pitch-count. Ward gave up a lead-off single to Vince Rooi, but followed with a strikeout. An error followed on a force play-grounder by Rachid Engelhardt, which enabled Rooi to reach third base. He then scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Seb Visser. Hereafter, Ward was relieved by Daan Hendrix, who completed the game and became the winning pitcher.

Amsterdam Pirates reacted immediately, rallying for four runs of five hits in the top of the seventh inning. Oscar Meuris began the inning in relief of Kaj Timmermans, but gave up lead-off singles to Zerzinho Croes and Nick Urbanus, which resulted in runners at the corners. With one out, an injury delay followed, resulting in the replacement of Meuris. Moreno Vork took over and gave up a 2-run double to Kenny Berkenbosch, which gave Amsterdam a renewed lead. With two outs, Linoy Croes and Rashid Gerard added runscoring singles to make it an 8-4 score.

In the bottom of the seventh, HCAW got two runners into scoring position. Dylan Koster and Delano Selassa began with singles and the two moved with two outs on a passed ball, but then were left behind.

Daan Hendrix retired the side in the eighth, then gave up a 2-out single to Delano Selassa in the ninth. A grounder ended the inning and the game. And with that, Amsterdam Pirates had reached the Holland Series. With the win, both Hooffdorp Pioniers and HCAW were officially eliminated.
