Neptunus clinches Holland Series and qualifies for European Cup
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won big with a 15-3 score on Sunday (September 17) against Hoofddorp Pioniers to become the first team to officially secure a spot in the Holland Series. On Thursday and on Saturday, the first games of this 3-game series rained out. These games will be made up on Monday and Tuesday.

One hour and five minutes later, L&D Amsterdam Pirates concluded its game against HCAW and won 8-4. With that, Amsterdam became the second finalist. Because of the Amsterdam-win, Neptunus qualified for participation in next years European Champions Cup. As winner of the regular season, Amsterdam already had secured its qualification for the European Cup-tournament. The team that wins the Holland Series, which is the Dutch champion, normally also qualifies for this event, but when that team is the same as the regular season-winner, the losing team of the Final also qualifies.

Neptunus and Amsterdam Pirates will open the best-of-seven Holland Series on Thursday, September 28. Last year, the two teams also faced each other in the Final. Both teams have five games remaining in the Championship Pool. These games will decide first and second place, which will determine the home advantage in the Championship Final. Currently, Neptunus is in first place and Amsterdam in second. Starting on Thursday-evening, the two teams will close the Championship Pool with a 3-game series against each other.

In today's game, Neptunus led 7-0 after four innings, then added a 7-run rally in the sixth at bat. The team collected 13 basehits, including four by Dwayne Kemp and three by Stijn van der Meer. Gianison Boekhoudt and Van der Meer homered, while Kemp scored three runs. Jochem Koedijk batted in three runs.

Paul Brands homered for Pioniers, which recorded only five basehits this afternoon.

Complete schedule

Neptunus opened the score with two runs in the first inning off of starter Chris Pfau. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Stijn van der Meer, who then tripped over first base and had to settle for a single for what was a possible double. Van der Meer was then forced out on a grounder by Benjamin Dille. With two outs, Dille stole second base, advanced on a throwing error and scored on a following single by Dwayne Kemp. Moments later, Kemp stole second base, then scored when another throwing error followed.

In the second inning, Neptunus rallied for four runs, three of them unearned as the at bat began with another error of the Pioniers-defense. Shaldimar Daantji led off for Neptunus and appeared to reach first base in time with an infield-hit on an errant throw, but a throwing error was recorded. Hereafter, Ruar Verkerk walked and Daniel Fernandes followed with a runscoring single. With one out, the bases got loaded when Chris Pfau walked Stijn van der Meer. The lefthander then also walked Benjamin Dille, resulting in the next run. With two outs, Neptunus added two more runs on a single by Dwayne Kemp and a walk for Gregory Muller to lift the lead to 7-0.

Neptunus scored its eighth run in the third at bat on a 2-out single by Benjamin Dille.

Neptunus-starter Diegomar Markwell retired the side in the first inning. The lefthander got two baserunners in the second, but then was supported with an inning-ending double play. In the third, Markwell gave up a lead-off double to Sander Paap, but he was left behind. After retiring the side again in the fourth, Markwell gave up a run in the fifth. He walked Shurman Marlin, who then scored on an one-out double by Sander Paap.

Neptunus put the lead (almost) out of reach with a 7-run rally in the top of the sixth inning off of Glenn Wassink, which increased the lead to 14-2. He had taken over in the fourth inning for Chris Pfau, who walked six batters and had thrown 45 balls and 45 strikes. Wassink retired the side in the fourth and fifth (four strikeouts). In the sixth, Stijn van der Meer led off with a homerun. With one out, Gianison Boekhoudt hit a towering homerun after having struckout in his previous three at bats. This was Boekhoudt's fourth homerun in the Championship Pool. Wassink then gave up singles to Dwayne Kemp and Gregory Muller and was replaced by rookie Luuk ter Beek. He got the bases loaded when he walked Shaldimar Daantji, then gave up a sacrifice fly to Ruar Verkerk. The bases got loaded again when Daniel Fernandes walked and Jochem Koedijk followed with a baseclearing, 3-run double. Koedijk later scored on a single by Stijn van der Meer in his second at bat in the inning.

Pioniers scored its final run in the game in the bottom of the sixth when Paul Brands led off with a homerun. Neptunus scored one more run in the seventh via a runscoring single by Gregory Muller.

Veteran Elton Koeiman threw the bottom of the seventh for Neptunus and retired the side to end the game.
