Quick Amersfoort closes with two losses against Twins
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - A day after it secured promotion to the big league, Quick Amersfoort played a double-header against De Glaskoning Twins on Sunday (September 17). On Saturday, the first game between the two teams rained out and was made up today. Twins won both games to finish in first place in the Promotion/Relegation Pool. After winning only 5-4 in the opener, Twins won the second game more comfortably with an 8-1 score. For both teams, the season ended today.

With the two losses, Quick Amersfoort now shares third place with Storks, which promoted to the big league today after winning against Onze Gezellen. With that, the top-4 in the Promotion/Relegation Pool has been decided.

Storks had one game remaining against Onze Gezellen, which also will be the final game in this Pool. When it wins, it will finish in third place, while Quick Amersfoort has to settle for fourth place. In case Storks loses, the two teams end up in a tie, but Quick will then finish in third place, based on the Team Quality Balance. The two teams won against each other in their 2-game series, meaning the TQB will be decisive.

In today's opener, Twins led 3-0 halfway the fourth inning an 4-2 halfway the eighth. Quick then came alongside, but Twins re-took the lead in the ninth to win. Quick outhit Twins 8-7.

In the second game, Twins trailed 1-0, then scored three runs in the fifth. The team also rallied for three runs in the eighth. This time, Twins outhit Quick 9-4.

On Saturday, Quick Amersfoort promoted after DSS won against Pickles UVV, which today relegated after seven years. Quick Amersfoort last played in the highest division in 1996, but then relegated. In 2003, the team qualified for the Promotion Pool, but then finished in fifth place.

While playing in the big league, Quick Amersfoort had several successful seasons and played many attractive games in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at its home site in Amersfoort. In 1993, Quick finished in first place in the regular season to qualify for the Play-Offs, but then was eliminated for the Holland Series in a close and very attractive the best-of-five against Neptunus. All five games ended in an one-run difference and Neptunus won the series 3-2 to advance to the Final. Amongst the players, who played for Quick Amersfoort throughout the years are wellknown players (and Netherlands Team-players), including (in alphabetical order) Rocky Angela, Etienne Artsen, Judsel Baranco, Jerrel Bernardus, Carlos van Heyningen, Patrick van Heyningen, Louis Jacobs, Tony Rombley, Ed Tromp and Juani Werleman. In later years, players as Peter Callenbach and Dirk van 't Klooster also played for the Amersfoort-squad.

Game One

In the opener, Twins took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning and led 4-2, but Quick Amersfoort came alongside in the eighth. Twins then scored the deciding run in the ninth inning.

In the top of the first inning, Twins got on base early off of starter Mees Cremer, who made his first start for Quick in this Pool. The most pitching in the previous games was done by the lefthanded twin-brothers Brian van Laar and Colin van Laar, who respectively threw 24 1/3 and 27 1/3 inning, including today's games. Beforehand, Quick's Head Coach Marco Wels already had announced that he would use all pitchers in his staff, who all have made a contribution in the success of the team this season. Wels used nine different pitchers in today's double-header. The lone pitcher, who didn't threw was Jos de Jong, but he was the third baseman in both games.

In the first inning, Cremer walked Bob van der Meer and Jamie Verheyleweghen, but struckout the next hitter. After the two runners had executed a double-steal, Cremer followed with another strikeout, then a grounder ended the at bat.

Twins opened the score with three runs in the second at bat. Christopher Ge led off with a walk, then the bases got loaded with one out when Cremer hit Bart Janssen with a pitch and also walked Nick Peels. Another walk for Bob van der Meer followed, resulting in the first run. Hereafter, Jamie Verheyleweghen delivered a 2-run single.

Twins-starter Brendan Schoemaker struckout eleven batters and gave up only five hits in the seven innings he pitched, but ended up with a no-decision. The righthander gave up a 2-out double to Bas de Jong in the first inning, but then closed with a strikeout. After retiring the side in the next two innings (four strikeouts), Schoemaker gave up a run in the fourth. Niels van Weert led off with a single, stole second base, moved on a grounder by Bas de Jong and scored on a grounder by Bryan Engelhadt.

Twins got the run back immediately in the top of the fifth inning off of reliever Aaron Isenia. Dennis De Quint led off with a double and the Belgian player then moved on a single by Melvin Perdue and scored when a pick-off towards first base ended in an error.

Quick also scored again in the bottom of the fifth when Luigino Rosaria homered with one out.

Twins failed to take some more distance in the next three innings. The team left the bases loaded in the sixth. With one out, new pitcher Dennis van den Bunt got the bases loaded. He first hit Nick Peels with a pitch. After Peels had reached third base via a stolen base and a passed ball, Jamie Verheyleweghen and Dennis De Quint both walked. Rowald Reemst then took over the pitching and got an inning-ending flyout.

In the seventh, lefthander Brian van Laar took the mound for Quick and saw Twins leave two more runners. The team also stranded two in the eighth at bat.

After Twins had left eight runners behind since the fifth, Quick came alongside in the bottom of the eighth. With a 4-2 lead, Mic van de Ven took over the Twins-pitching, but he was greeted with a lead-off single by Wesley Bernardus, followed by a double from Niels van Weert. A run was then scored on a grounder by Bas de Jong and with two outs, Van Weert scored the tying run on a single by Jos de Jong. Van de Ven closed with a strikeout, then became the winning pitcher moments later.

In the top of the ninth, Twins re-took the lead. Christopher Ge led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a single by Nick Peels to make it a 5-4 score.

Thijs Steenwijk then pitched the ninth for Twins and retired the side, including two strikeouts, to earn a save.

Game Two

In the second game, Quick Amersfoort took an 1-0 lead in the third inning, but that would be the lone run the team scored. In the bottom of the fifth, Twins scored three runs and went on to record another victory.

Quick left runners behind in scoring position in the first two at bats, but then opened the score in the third off of starter Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro. Wesley Bernardus led off with a walk, then Niels van Weert singled. Bernardus moved to third base after Bas de Jong fouled out, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Engelhardt.

Twins again left a lot of runners behind in this game. In the first inning, off of starter Colin van Laar, two runners stranded, then three were left behind in the second at bat. Twins was retired in order in the third, but left two more runners in the fourth.

Twins then finally was able to move the runners around in the fifth inning, scoring three unearned runs with two outs and taking over the lead. With one out, Dennis De Quint walked and with two outs, Mick Molenaar singled. Moments later, De Quint moved to third base on a wild pitch. With runners at the corners, Christopher Ge struckout, but the ball was in the ground, needing a throw to first base. However, a throwing error ended up in rightfield, enabling both De Quint and Molenaar to score, while Ge ended up on third base. Hereafter, Tair Vrutaal delivered a runscoring single to make it a 4-1 score.

Twins added two more runs in the sixth off of new pitcher T'Shawn James. With one out, Nick Peels walked, stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch. After Bob van der Meer also walked, Jamie Verheyleweghen followed with a runscoring single. Another wild pitch brought the runners to second and third base, then another run was added on a grounder by Dennis De Quint.

Quick, which was retired in order in the fifth and sixth inning by Sarmiento, got into scoring position again in the seventh off of reliever Jan Evertse. He walked lead-off hitter Kai Berkel, who moved to third base on two grounders, but then was left behind.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bob Klaarenbeek pitched in his first game for Quick in the Promotion/Relegation Pool. The lefthander walked Mick Molenaar and gave up a single to Christopher Ge. Twins' Assistant Coach Shurty Tremus then entered the game as pinch-runner for Ge and with one out, the bases got loaded when Denzel Bryson walked. But Twins again left three runners behind.

In the eighth, Twins had another 3-run rally off of new pitcher Jay-Jay Muller, who also made his first appearance. He walked lead-off hitter Jamie Verheyleweghen, then gave up a single to Dennis De Quint, which led to runners on first and third base. A wild pitch then accounted for a run, as did a grounder by Mick Molenaar. With two outs, Shurty Tremus walked and went on to score on a double by Tair Vrutaal to make it an 8-1 score.

As it now was apparent that Quick would not turn the game around again in its favor, four pitchers got an at bat in the top of the ninth inning off of new pitcher Matthew Latta. Brian van Laar led off and walked (and later stole second base), but hereafter Latta struckout Mees Cremer, Aaron Isenia and Dennis van den Bunt to end the game.
