Kenley Jansen finalist for Reliever of the Year

NEW YORK CITY, New York (USA) - Kenley Jansen has again been named one of the three finalists for the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award. Also on Tuesday (October 17), three finalists were named for the Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award. The awards will be presented on October 28 before Game 4 of the World Series.

Fans can vote for the finalists, while a panel of eight former great relievers will also have a say in the balloting. These eight bullpen-greats are Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter, Lee Smith, John Franco and Billy Wagner.

Kenley Jansen was 5-0 with 41 saves and an 1.32 ERA, throwing in 65 games. He struckout 109 hitters in 68 1/3 inning. Jansen had this third career 40-plus save season and he led all regular relievers with his 1.32 ERA. Jansen was tied for second place in the Majors with 41 saves. Jansen won the Award last year.

The other finalists in the National League are Wade Davis and Corey Knebel.

Wade Davis (Chicago Cubs) was 4-2 with 32 saves and a 2.30 ERA in 59 games. Davis struckout 79 hitters in 58 2/3 inning.

Corey Knebel (Milwaukee Brewers) was 1-4 this season with an 1.78 ERA and 39 saves. In 75 appearances, he struckout 126 hitters in 76 innings pitched. He shared the lead in the Majors with 126 strikeouts (with Craig Kimbrel) Knebel set a Major League-record with 45 consecutive appearances with at least one strikeout.

The three finalists for the American League Reliever of the Year are:

Ken Giles (Houston Astros), who earned 34 saves and was 1-3. He closed the season with a 2.30 ERA in 63 games and struckout 83 hitters in 62 2/3 inning.

Craig Kimbrel (Boston Red Sox), who shared the lead amongst Major League-relievers with 126 strikeouts (with Corey Knebel). He led American League-relievers with an 1.43 ERA. Kimbrel was 5-0 with 35 saves and threw 69 innings in 67 games. Kimbrel won the award in 2014 in the National League when he was with the Atlanta Braves.

David Robertson (New York Yankees) was 9-2 with 14 saves in 61 games, finishing with an 1.84 ERA. He struckout 98 hitters in 68 1/3 inning. Robertson began the season with the Chicago White Sox.
