CHICAGO, Illinois (USA) - Los Angeles Dodgers won 6-1 against Chicago Cubs in Game 3 of the best-of-seven National League Championship Series on Tuesday-evening (October 17) to take 3-0 lead. Los Angeles opened the Series on Saturday with a 5-2 victory, then won 4-1 on Sunday. Game 4 will be played on Wednesday in Chicago. Los Angeles then can complete a sweep to reach the World Series.

The Dodgers briefly trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but then came alongside in the second on a homerun by Andre Ethier. Chris Taylor then put Los Angeles ahead in the third with a homerun and brought in the next run in the fifth with a triple. Winning pitcher Yu Darvish struckout seven and gave up six hits in 6 1/3 inning. As a hitter, he brought in a run in the sixth with a basesloaded walk.

The starting pitchers today were Kyle Hendricks (Chicago) and Yu Darvish (Los Angeles).

27-year old righthander Kyle Hendricks was 7-5 with a 3.03 this season. Hendricks started two games in the NLDS against Washington Nationals and was 1-0. He was the starter and winner in Game 1, striking out six hitters in seven innings. Hendricks then also was the starter in the deciding Game 5, which was won by Chicago with a 9-8 score. In this game, the righthander threw four innings and struckout seven hitters, but also gave up nine hits and four runs.

31-year old righthander Yu Darvish was 10-12 this season with a 3.86 ERA. The Japanese righthander was the starting and winning pitcher in Game 3 of the NLDS against Arizona Diamondbacks. In that game, the Dodgers completed a sweep. Darvish struckout seven hitters and gave up only two hits in five innings.

(October 17)

Chicago took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off of Yu Darvish. With one out, Kyle Schwarber homered, but that would led to Chicago's lone run in the game. After Schwarber's homerun, the Cubs got two more baserunners in the opening at bat. Kris Bryant singled and after Darvish had struckout Anthony Rizzo, Willson Contreras also singled. With two runners on, Darvish closed with another strikeout, this time for Jon Jay.

The Dodgers came alongside immediately in the top of the second inning when Andre Ethier led off with a homerun.

With one out in the third inning, the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead when Chris Taylor homered.

In the fourth, Yasiel Puig led off for the Dodgers with a single, but Kyle Hendricks then struckout the next two hitters and got a pop-out to end the inning.

The Dodgers took more distance from the fifth inning on. In the top of the fifth, Joc Pederson led off with a double, then scored with one out on a triple by Chris Taylor to make it a 3-1 score. Moments later, Taylor was eliminated at the plate, trying to score on a grounder to first by Cody Bellinger. A line out into rightfield ended the at bat.

Another Dodger-run was scored in the sixth. Lead-off hitter Yasiel Puig reached on an error and advanced on a single by Andre Ethier. That marked the end for Kyle Hendricks, who was relieved by Carl Edwards, Jr.. The two runners moved on a grounder from veteran Chase Utley, then the bases got loaded when Austin Barnes walked. With two outs, the run was scored when Edwards walked his collegue Yu Darvish, resulting in a 4-1 score. Three runners were left behind when Edwards struckout Chris Taylor.

In the seventh, the Dodgers got their first two hitters on base off of new pitcher Pedro Strop. Lead-off hitter Cody Bellinger reached second base on an error, then Justin Turner walked. But hereafter, Yasiel Puig grounded into a double play and a grounder ended the at bat.

After giving up the run in the first inning, Yu Darvish retired the side in the second at bat. He then gave up a 2-out single to Kris Bryant in the third, but he stranded on first base. Darvish got two baserunners in the fourth, again with two outs. Addison Russell then singled and Jason Heyward walked, but Darvish then struckout Kyle Hendricks to close the inning.

Darvish retired the side again in the fifth, but gave up a lead-off single to Anthony Rizzo in the sixth. But after a strikeout, the righthander was supported with a double play.

With a 4-1 lead, Darvish began the bottom of the seventh inning with a strikeout for Addison Russell. Hereafter, he was relieved by Tony Watson, who retired the next two hitters.

In the top of the eighth, the Dodgers scored twice to increase the lead to 6-1. Mike Montgomery was the new Cubs-pitcher, but he walked pinch-hitter Logan Forsythe and gave up a single to Austin Barnes. The two runners moved on a wild pitch, then Montgomery struckout pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson, but the third strike ended in a passed ball, which led to a run. With runners at the corners, the next run was scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Kyle Farmer.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Morrow threw for the Dodgers. With one out, he walked Kyle Schwarber, but then retired the next two hitters.

While the score was 6-1, meaning it was not a save-situation, Kenley Jansen threw the ninth inning for the Dodgers. Jansen needed only twelve pitches to close the game. He first got a pop-fly from Addison Russell, then struckout pinch-hitter Tommy La Stella and Ian Happ.
