HCAW shuts out DSS; Amsterdam Pirates in Championship Pool
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW shutout DSS 3-0 on Sunday (June 18) to complete a 3-game sweep. The Bussum-squad won the opener on Thursday-evening 6-2, then nipped DSS 7-6 on Saturday.

Because of the loss of DSS, league-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates became the first team to reach the Championship Pool. In the remainder of the season, DSS can in theory end up in a tie for fourth place with Amsterdam. For this to happen, DSS has to win all its remaining games, while Amsterdam has to lose all its remaining games. When a season splits in two following halfs, the tie-breaker for two teams (or more) that are tied is the head-to-head results between the teams concerned. Of the six games against DSS, Amsterdam won five. A 3-way tie is also possible with Hoofddorp Pioniers and DSS, but when that happens (DSS then has to sweep Pioniers in its upcoming series), the total head-to-head results also will be in favor of Amsterdam.

In Bussum, the game between HCAW and DSS remained scoreless for six innings. HCAW then scored its three runs in the seventh. The team collected nine basehits, including three by Rossini Frolijk.

Ian Delemarre, who celebrated his birthday today, went the distance for HCAW and gave up only four basehits in the first shutout of his career. For Delemarre, this was his first 9-inning complete game. It was his first complete game since June 22, 2012, almost exactly five years ago. Back then, he threw all seven innings for Amsterdam Pirates in a mercy-rule 21-1 victory against his current team HCAW.

(June 18)

Complete schedule

In his first career 9-inning complete game and first career shutout, Ian Delemarre needed 116 pitches. The righthander walked six batters and gave up only four basehits. Only three DSS-runners were able to reach second base.

DSS-starter Donny Breek also had a fine outing. The righthander struckout four batters and gave up only five hits in 6 1/3 inning.

Kevin Nieveld led off the first inning for DSS with a single, but when he tried to stretch it into a double, he was thrown out at second base by rightfielder Rachid Engelhardt. In the second inning, it was Tino van Erk, who led off for DSS with a single, but he was eliminated in an inning-ending double play.

In the third at bat, DSS reached second base for the first time. Sven van de Sanden led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Devano Pieter. With two outs, he was tagged out by third baseman Vince Rooi on a grounder by Kevin Nieveld.

In the fourth, with two outs, Tino van Erk singled again for DSS, but this time, he was forced out.

After stranding a runner on first base in the fifth, DSS got another runner on second base in the sixth. Kevin Nieveld led off with a walk, but was forced out a bunt by Odion Gouverneur. The latter then reached second base on a sacrifice bunt by Koen Halderman, but then was picked off by Delemarre moments later.

HCAW was retired in order by Donny Breek in the first inning, then got into scoring position for the first time in the second at bat. With two outs, Kevin Weijgertse walked and moved to third base on a single by Rossini Frolijk, but the two were left behind. In the third inning, Delano Selassa led of for HCAW with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique. Next batter Boyd Tuhumury flied out to leftfield. After the ball was caught, Selassa tried to score, but was eliminated at the plate by catcher Koen Halderman on a nice throw from leftfielder Devano Pieter.

In the following innings, HCAW again got into scoring position, but was unable to score. In the fourth, Vince Rooi led off with a walk and stole second base with two outs, but a line drive ended the at bat.

In the fifth, HCAW got the bases loaded with no outs. Rossini Frolijk led off with a single and Rachid Engelhardt followed with a double, then the bases got loaded when Delano Selassa reached on an infield-hit. Hereafter, Donny Breek struckout the next batter, then an infield-fly and a flyout ended the inning.

HCAW decided the game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs. With one out, Rachid Engelhardt and Dylan Koster walked. Tim Halderman then took over the pitching from Breek, but he saw the two runners advance on a wild pitch, then gave up a 2-run single to Roelie Henrique. With two outs, Kevin Dirksen added a runscoring single to make it a 3-0 score.

In the eighth, HCAW got into scoring position again off of closer Bayron Cornelisse. With one out, Rossini Frolijk and Rachid Engelhardt both singled and moved on a wild pitch, but they stranded on second and third base.

In both the seventh and eighth inning, DSS left another runner at first base, then got its final runner on second base in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Djewi Appelman singled and moved on a wild pitch. Ian Delemarre then ended the game in style with a strikeout to complete his first shutout.
