Pioniers decides game against UVV with 6-run rally
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers rallied for six runs in the third inning on Sunday (June 18) en route to a 7-3 victory against Pickles UVV. On Thursday, Pioniers had won the opener with an 8-1 score. On Saturday, UVV scored five runs in the first three innings to win 6-4.

Nick Keur had a good start for Pioniers. The lefthander gave up only four hits in seven strong innings in which he struckout five batters. UVV then scored its three runs in the eighth on a homerun by Sergino Martis.

For the second day in a row, the two teams combined on eight errors. UVV made five errors on both Saturday and today, while Pioniers committed three errors on both days.

Complete schedule

UVV-starter Gilian van Lith allowed only one batter to reach base in the first two innings. The lefthander walked lead-off hitter Jeffrey Arends in the second at bat, but then retired the next three batters.

Pioniers then struck with six runs in the third inning on only three hits, while the UVV-defense contributed with three errors, which resulted in five unearned runs. Joey Eeman led off the inning with a double, moved to third base on a grounder by Duco Nuijten, then scored when Brennan Nijhof reached on an error. Moments later, UVV got a second chance to eliminate Nijhof, but this time, he moved to third base when a pick-off ended in an error. Nijhof then scored on a passed ball, which was strike-three for Mervin Gario, who ended up on first base. Gario stole second base, then appeared to be caught stealing at third base, but another error was made in that situation. With Gario now on third base, Shurman Marlin walked and Jeffrey Arends followed with a runscoring single to bring in the third run in this inning. With Marlin on third base and Arends at first, a double-steal situation led to the next run. Hereafter, Max Draijer walked and Glenn Bakker added an RBI-single. Bakker was then forced out on a grounder by Mark Smit, but that also enabled Draijer to score and lift the lead to 6-0.

Hereafter, UVV recovered somewhat, as it took until the eighth inning for Pioniers to score its next (and final) run.

In the fourth inning, Kevin van Veen took over the pitching for UVV and threw four fine innings in which he gave up only two basehits. Both of these hits were hit in the fourth. Van Veen gave up a lead-off single to Duco Nuijten, but he was caught stealing. Hereafter, Brennan Nijhof also singled, but he stranded on third base.

Pioniers left another runner on third base in the fifth, then was retired in order by Van Veen in the sixth and seventh.

In the eighth, José Moreno became the new pitcher for UVV. With two outs, he gave up three consecutive singles to Mark Smit, Joey Eeman and Duco Nuijten, which gave Pioniers a seventh run.

Pioniers-starter Nick Keur gave up singles to Berend Ruben and Sergino Martis with two outs in the first inning, but then closed with a strikeout.

In the second, he saw lead-off hitter Tijmen Takke reach on an error, but the lefthander then retired the next 14 consecutive batters.

In the seventh, UVV got the bases loaded off Keur with no outs. Mike Bazuin and Tijmen Takke opened with singles, then Julian Rip reached on an error. They all were left behind, as a foul-out, infield-fly and a caught bunt ended the inning.

With a 7-0 lead, Scott Ronnenbergh took over the pitching from Keur in the eighth inning. The lefthander began with walks for Bryce Cherry and Berend Ruben, then gave up a homerun to Sergino Martis. Hereafter, a flyout and strikeout followed. Ronnenbergh then faced Jordan Illis, who made his comeback in the team of UVV and flied out in his first at bat.

After last season, Illis left UVV to play for DSS. This year, the outfielder played in ten games for DSS and batted .250 (7-for-28) with two doubles. Illis, who mostly played in centerfield, scored seven runs and batted in three. On May 25, he played his last game for DSS, but the two then separated. Last week, Illis transfered back to UVV.

With a 7-3 lead, Darryl Jamoena pitched the ninth inning for Pioniers and he also got some baserunners. He got two quick outs, but then got the bases loaded when Rick Kuipers singled, Bryce Cherry reached on an error and Berend Ruben walked. A pop-up then ended the game.
