Small make-up win Neptunus against Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus, the current number one in the Championship Pool, recorded a small 2-0 win on Monday-evening (September 18) in the first of two make-up games against Hoofddorp Pioniers. L&D Amsterdam Pirates, which is in second place, tonight won only 4-2 in its make-up game against HCAW. The four teams will play another make-up game on Tuesday.

Today's game was initially scheduled for last Thursday, but then rained out. After Saturday's game also rained out, Neptunus won big on Sunday with a 15-3 score.

As both Neptunus and Amsterdam Pirates clinched the Holland Series on Sunday, the remaining games in the Championship Pool are just played for-the-record. Of course, first and second place still have to be decided between Neptunus and Amsterdam. But especially the upcoming series between HCAW and Pioniers really doesn't matter anymore. The statistics of the games in this Pool don't count for the regular season and the two finalists are known. So, home advantage for the Holland Series also could have been decided by the ranking at the moment the two finalists are clear, or based on the final ranking in the regular season. Maybe something to think about for next season.

In Hoofddorp, Neptunus scored its runs in the fourth and sixth inning. The team collected seven basehits, while Pioniers had only four. In the second inning, Pioniers' Head Coach Dè Flanegin was ejected (again) for making some remarks following a call at first base.

(September 18)

Complete schedule

Neptunus reached base in seven of its nine at bats tonight, but score only once. The team was held scoreless in the first three innings by Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer, then scored a run in the fourth and sixth inning. Maickel Rietel allowed only one more batter to reach base in the final two at bats.

Stijn van der Meer led off the top of the first inning for Neptunus with an infield-hit, but Huijer struckout the next two batters, then a grounder closed the at bat.

With one out in the second inning, Shaldimar Daantji grounded towards short and was ruled safe at first base when first baseman Jeffrey Arends made an error. Pioniers Head Coach Dè Flanegin argued the safe-call with 1B Umpire Peter Brink. Hereafter, he made some remarks towards Home Plate Umpire Stenar van Groningen Schinkel and was ejected. Moments later, Daantji stole second base and advanced to third base on a grounder, but then stranded.

In the third inning, with two outs, Benjamin Dille reached on an infield-hit, but he also was left behind.

Neptunus then opened the score in the top of the fourth inning. Dwayne Kemp led off with a single and advanced on a grounder by Daniel Fernandes. He then scored the first run on a following single by Shaldimar Daantji, who was then forced out. Huijer closed with a strikeout.

After being retired in order in the fifth, Neptunus doubled its lead in the sixth. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a double, then moved on a bunt-single by Dwayne Kemp. When the latter was forced out on a grounder by Daniel Fernandes, Boekhoudt scored. Moments later, Fernandes was eliminated in a pick-off and Huijer closed with another strikeout.

In the seventh, Huijer was supported with an inning-ending double play. That followed a single by Darryl Collins, the first while playing in the main-squad. However, this was not his first official big league-basehit, as the stats of these games are separated from the regular season.

Maickel Rietel took over from Lars Huijer in the eighth and then retired the side. In the ninth, he saw Daniel Fernandes reach on an error, but he stranded on first base.

Orlando Yntema had a fine outing as starting pitcher for Neptunus, striking out nine batters and giving up only three hits in the five innings he pitched.

Pioniers got several runners in scoring position, but was unable to score. In the first at bat, the team got its first two hitters on base. Joey Eeman led off with a walk and Mervin Gario singled, but Yntema struckout the next two batters and a flyout ended the at bat.

Pioniers again got two baserunners in the second. With one out, Gianni Frolijk singled and Sander Paap walked, but this time, a foul-out and strikeout followed.

Pioniers got another runner in scoring position in the third. Yntema hit lead-off hitter Mervin Gario with a pitch and he stole second base with one out, but then also was left behind.

Now trailing 1-0, Pioniers got its next runner in scoring position in the fifth. Glenn Bakker led off with a single, but was picked off by catcher Brian Raap. With two outs, Mervin Gario struckout, but reached on a wild pitch. He then again stole second base, but Yntema closed with a strikeout.

With a 2-0 lead, Jan Tomek took over the Neptunus-pitching in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, he gave up a comeback infield-hit to Dudley Leonora, who moved on a grounder, but the Czech then closed with a strikeout.

In the final three at bats, Pioniers was retired in order by Tomek, who earned a rare 4-inning save.
