THE BRONX, NEW YORK CITY, New York (USA) - New York Yankees shutout Houston Astros 5-0 on Wednesday-evening (October 18) in Game 5 of the best-of-seven American League Championship Series to take a 3-2 lead. Houston won the first two games on Friday and Saturday with a small 2-1 score. On Monday, New York forced a fifth game by winning convincingly with an 8-1 score, then came from behind on Tuesday to win 6-4 and even the Series. The Series now returns to Houston, where Game 6 will be played on Friday.

Yankee-starter Masahiro Tanaka had a strong outing for the Yankees, striking out eight hitters and giving up only three hits in seven solid innings. Houston-starter Dallas Keuchel struckout eight in 4 2/3 inning, but also gave up seven hits and four runs.

New York collected 10 basehits, including three by Chase Headley and two by Gary Sánchez and Didi Gregorius. Sánchez also homered and batted in two runs.

The starting pitchers today were Masahiro Tanaka (New York) and Dallas Keuchel (Houston).

28-year old righthander Masahiro Tanaka was 13-12 this season with a 4.74 ERA. The Japanese pitcher was the starting and winning in Game 3 of the ALDS against Cleveland Indians. Tanaka then also had a great outing with seven strikeouts and three hits given up when he threw seven scoreless innings in an 1-0 win. He then was the starting and losing pitcher in Game 1 of the ALCS against Houston, giving up four hits and two runs in six innings.

29-year old lefthander Dallas Keuchel was 14-5 with a 2.90 ERA this season. He was the starting and winning pitcher in Game 2 of the ALDS against Boston Red Sox, striking out seven and giving up three hits in 5 2/3 inning. In Game 1 of the ALCS against New York, Keuchel struckout ten hitters and gave up four hits in seven innings to become the winning pitcher in a 2-1 win.

(October 18)

New York opened the score in the bottom of the second inning off of Dallas Keuchel, who suffered his first postseason-loss in his career. With two outs, the lefthander gave up a double to Starlin Castro, who then scored on a following single by Greg Bird.

The Yankees doubled their lead in the third inning. Chase Headley led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Brett Gardner. The speedy Gardner then scored all the way from first base when Aaron Judge doubled. Keuchel struckout the next two hitters, but Houston trailed 2-0.

Keuchel struckout two more hitters in the fourth, but then gave up two runs in the fifth at bat. With one out, Chase Headley reached on an infield-hit, then advanced when a throwing error followed. With two outs, Keuchel pitched around Aaron Judge, who walked. But hereafter, Gary Sánchez and Didi Gregorius both delivered runscoring singles to increase the lead to 4-0. And that led to the departure of Keuchel, who was replaced by Will Harris. He got an inning-ending flyout.

New York got close to adding another run in the sixth inning. With one out, Greg Bird walked and with two outs Chase Headley doubled, which led to another pitching change. Brad Peacock took over and ended the inning by striking out Brett Gardner.

The Yankees were productive again in the seventh. First, Peacock struckout Aaron Judge, but then gave up a homerun to Gary Sánchez and a double to Didi Gregorius. However, Gregorius was left behind when Peacock struckout Aaron Hicks and got a grounder from Starlin Castro.

Yankee-starter Masahiro Tanaka got his first runner in scoring position in the second inning when Yulieski Gurriel led off with a double. He moved to third base on a grounder by Alex Bregman, but the Cuban was left behind when two more grounders followed. Moments later, the Yankees took an 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, George Springer singled for Houston with one out, but stranded on second base. After retiring the side in the fourth, Tanaka opened the fifth with another strikeout. He then gave up a single to Marwin Gonzalez and walked Brian McCann, but then struckout the next two hitters.

Tanaka retired the side in the sixth and seventh, adding three more strikeouts. He was relieved by Tommy Kahnle, who retired the side in the eighth. In the ninth, Kahnle gave up an one-out double to Carlos Correa, who moved to third base on a grounder. But he stranded when a line drive into centerfield ended the game.
